Position Summary
The Freight Audit Specialist is responsible for reviewing and validating customer and carrier financials to ensure accurate invoicing, cost allocation, and margin integrity. This role audits freight invoices, investigates and resolves billing discrepancies, collaborates with 4PL Account Managers, Operations and Accounting, and supports the accuracy of financial data throughout the shipment lifecycle.
This position does not manage accounts payable or carrier payments. Instead, it focuses on financial accuracy, audit compliance, process improvement, and issue resolution.
Key Responsibilities
As an integral part of the Transportation Management process, the Freight Audit Specialist will ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and transparency of financial transactions that directly impact carrier relationships, client satisfaction, and overall operational excellence. Responsibilities include:
Audit a high volume of carrier invoices in a timely and accurate manner. Audit multi-modal freight and service provider invoices against contracted rates, load tenders, and client billing instructions to ensure accuracy. Research and resolve invoice discrepancies in collaboration with Account Management, Operations, Carrier Relations, Accounting, and client-facing teams. Reconcile carrier statements and maintain positive working relationships with logistics service providers. Research and resolve outstanding financial exceptions identified during month-end review, partnering with Accounting and Operations as needed. Ensure compliance with internal controls, client-specific requirements, and financial reporting standards. Support process improvement initiatives to increase freight audit efficiency, automation, financial accuracy, and data integrity. Respond to carrier inquiries in a timely and professional manner regarding payment status, invoice details, and reconciliation issues. Collaborate closely with Accounting, Operations, and Technology teams to improve the integration, visibility, and accuracy of financial data across the TMS and related systems. Continuously evaluate freight audit workflows and TMS functionality, identifying opportunities to improve processes, leverage system capabilities, and enhance financial accuracy and operational efficiency.Qualifications
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the transportation and logistics industry. Hands-on experience working within a Transportation Management System (TMS).Experience in a 4PL environment and experience with MercuryGate is strongly preferred. Strong understanding of carrier invoices, customer requirements, freight audit and pay processes, and transportation documentation, including Bills of Lading (BOLs), Proofs of Delivery (PODs), and rate confirmations. Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Ability to identify and resolve billing discrepancies while maintaining accurate financial records. Excellent attention to detail with strong organizational and analytical skills. Ability to manage a high volume of transactions, prioritize competing demands, and consistently meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across Operations, Account Management, Accounting, customers, and carrier partners. Work Location: Remote, with possible quarterly travel.
