Position Summary

This job description is provided during orientation to outline the responsibilities and expectations of the Activity Director role. The Activity Director oversees the planning, coordination, and management of the Activities Department to ensure residents receive engaging, diverse, and meaningful programming that supports social, physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual well-being.

This position leads activity staff and volunteers, manages departmental operations and budgets, maintains regulatory compliance, and promotes a positive community culture aligned with Great Lakes Senior Living’s mission and values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Development & Resident Engagement

  • Develop and implement comprehensive activity programs supporting recreational, social, intellectual, religious, and fitness interests
  • Maintain weekly and monthly calendars with daily programming, seven days per week, including regular outings
  • Conduct resident interest surveys for new move-ins and personalize programming accordingly
  • Encourage participation through individual outreach and engagement
  • Track participation and evaluate program effectiveness

Department Leadership & Operations

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the Activities Department within budget
  • Recruit, train, schedule, evaluate, and supervise activity staff
  • Oversee volunteer recruitment, training, scheduling, and hours tracking
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe activity spaces and storage areas

Special Events & Community Partnerships

  • Plan themed days, holiday celebrations, fine dining events, and community gatherings
  • Collaborate with leadership to coordinate facility-wide events
  • Build and maintain community relationships to enhance programming

Communication & Promotion

  • Create and distribute monthly newsletters
  • Maintain regular social media activity while ensuring HIPAA compliance

Compliance & Professional Standards

  • Align all programming with company mission and values
  • Maintain compliance with DHS 83 and DHS 89 regulations
  • Follow all company policies and procedures
  • Attend required trainings and meetings

General Responsibilities

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Executive Director

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises Activities Department staff
  • Oversees volunteer program operations
  • Coordinates performance feedback and disciplinary processes as needed
Requirements:

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Three or more years of experience working with seniors, managing staff, and coordinating activity programs preferred

Certificates, Licenses, and Training

  • CBRF certified training in First Aid/Choking, Fire Safety, and Standard Precautions training preferred
  • Experience with geriatric population preferred
