Job Description

Description:

At Commence, we’re the start of a new age of data-centric transformation, elevating health outcomes and powering better, more efficient process to program and patient health. We combine quality data-driven solutions that fuel answers, technology that advances performance, and clinical expertise that builds trust to create a more efficient path to quality care.

With human-centered, healthcare-relevant, and value-based solutions, we create new possibilities with data. We provide proof beyond the concept and performance beyond the scope with a focus on efficiencies that transform the lives of those we serve. With a culture driven by purpose, straightforward communication and clinical domain expertise, Commence cuts straight to better care.

Requirements:

Commence is seeking a Coding Implementation Engineer to assist in the hands-on technical work of deploying a coding platform alongside our customers. This is a unique hybrid role for a technical professional who sits at the intersection of healthcare data engineering and medical coding. You will map EHR data, write advanced SQL, and configure automated logic for complex surgical coding workflows. This is the role that takes a signed customer from source data to production coding output: mapping their clinical and billing data into the platform, configuring coding logic against their specialty mix and payer rules, running the side-by-side validation period where platform output is compared against the customer's own coders, and closing every gap that period surfaces.

  • Map customer source data from EHR, scheduling, billing, and document repositories into the platform ingestion model, and define inbound and outbound interface requirements with the customer's IT and revenue cycle teams.
  • Write and validate SQL against customer extracts and platform databases to confirm data completeness, diagnose mapping defects, and build reconciliation queries that prove coverage.
  • Configure and implement coding logic for the customer's procedure catalog, specialty mix, modifier conventions, documentation patterns, and payer-specific requirements.
  • Run the side-by-side validation period: produce daily comparison reporting between platform output and customer coder output, root-cause each discrepancy to data, rule, or model, and drive remediation to closure before go-live.
  • Own gap remediation through go-live and the stabilization window, escalating platform defects to the product engineering team with reproducible cases and supporting data.
  • Work day-to-day in AWS and operate within customer-segregated environments.
  • Maintain customer configuration, mapping definitions, and coding rules in Git, and submit changes through the standard branch and review process.
  • Read Java-based rule and integration components well enough to trace behavior, and make small, well-scoped changes under Engineering review.
  • Serve as the customer's day-to-day technical point of contact through implementation, translating between clinical and revenue cycle stakeholders and Commence and partner engineers.
  • Contribute runbooks, reusable configuration patterns, and validation tooling that shorten the next implementation.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years implementing, configuring, or supporting healthcare software at provider organizations, or 3+ years in revenue cycle, HIM, or coding operations with hands-on system configuration responsibility.
  • Working knowledge of medical coding with direct exposure to surgical and procedural coding: CPT, ICD-10-CM and PCS, modifier application, NCCI edits, and operative note documentation.
  • Proficiency in SQL, including joins, aggregation, subqueries, and window functions, with the ability to independently investigate a data question end to end against large tables.
  • Working hands-on experience in AWS, including S3, RDS, EC2, CloudWatch, and IAM at a practitioner level.
  • Git for version control: branching, pull requests, and participation in code review.
  • Ability to read Java and make small, bounded changes to existing components. This is not a software development role and no full-stack development experience is required.
  • Demonstrated pattern recognition: experience looking at a discrepancy report spanning hundreds of cases and identifying the systematic cause rather than resolving case by case.
  • Detail orientation with evidence behind it, from a role where a single incorrect character carried financial, clinical, or compliance consequences.
  • Ability to hold a technical conversation with engineers and a business conversation with clinical and revenue cycle leadership, adjusting register for each audience.
  • Bachelor's degree, or four additional years of relevant experience in place of a degree.

Desired Qualifications

  • AAPC or AHIMA credential: CPC, COC, CCS, or CIRCC, with surgical specialty experience.
  • Epic or Cerner experience, particularly Epic Resolute Professional or Hospital Billing, OpTime, or Clarity and Caboodle reporting.
  • Experience with healthcare data standards including HL7 v2, FHIR, and X12 837 and 835.
  • Prior work with computer-assisted coding, autonomous coding, or NLP-based clinical documentation platforms.
  • Experience running a parallel-run or side-by-side validation against a legacy process.
  • Python for data analysis and validation scripting.
  • Ambulatory surgery center or multi-specialty surgical group experience.
