Medical Assistant Navigator – Women’s Health (Harmony)

Location: Boone, North Carolina | Women’s Health | Non-Exempt

As a Medical Assistant (MA) Navigator – Women’s Health at UNC Health Appalachian, you will play an important role in supporting expectant mothers throughout their pregnancy journey. Serving as a consistent point of connection for OB and prenatal patients, you’ll help coordinate care from the earliest stages of pregnancy while working closely with physicians, nurse midwives, and other members of the healthcare team.

This role is ideal for a compassionate, highly organized Medical Assistant who enjoys building relationships with patients and coordinating the many moving pieces involved in prenatal care. You’ll help patients understand what comes next, ensure important appointments and testing stay on track, and support an organized, patient-centered experience throughout pregnancy.

Compensation: Starting at $20.57 per hour, based on education, experience, and internal equity

Status: Non-Exempt

What You’ll Do as a Medical Assistant Navigator

Prenatal Intake & Care Planning

  • Conduct early visits with OB and prenatal patients and gather comprehensive medical histories.

  • Review patient information and help assess each patient’s risk level in collaboration with physicians and nurse midwives.

  • Work closely with healthcare providers to support the development of individualized care plans based on each patient’s needs and circumstances.

  • Ensure relevant patient information is accurately documented and communicated to the appropriate members of the care team.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of patient interactions, assessments, and care plans in the electronic health record (EHR).

Patient Navigation & Care Coordination

  • Serve as a consistent point of contact for patients as they navigate prenatal care.

  • Track and monitor each patient’s care plan to help ensure recommended services are completed accurately and on time.

  • Coordinate appointments, testing, procedures, and other components of prenatal care.

  • Help patients understand upcoming steps in their care and assist with navigating the healthcare process.

  • Identify gaps, delays, or concerns related to the care plan and communicate them to the appropriate healthcare provider.

  • Act as a liaison between patients and their healthcare team to promote timely communication and continuity of care.

Patient Support & Education

  • Build supportive relationships with patients and provide compassionate guidance throughout their pregnancy journey.

  • Answer patient questions and appropriately communicate or escalate clinical concerns to physicians, nurse midwives, or other members of the healthcare team.

  • Provide support and education related to prenatal care, nutrition, and overall well-being within the scope of the Medical Assistant role.

  • Reinforce information and recommendations provided by the patient’s healthcare team.

  • Help create a welcoming, respectful, and patient-centered experience for expectant mothers and their families.

Clinical Collaboration & Quality Care

  • Collaborate closely with physicians, nurse midwives, and other healthcare professionals involved in the patient’s prenatal care.

  • Facilitate communication between patients and providers to ensure relevant information is shared with the appropriate members of the care team.

  • Support coordinated, organized care delivery across the patient’s pregnancy journey.

  • Contribute to the overall quality and continuity of care provided to OB and prenatal patients.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and follow applicable privacy requirements in all communications and documentation.

Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA) with a focus on Obstetrics

Experience

  • Previous experience in a similar Medical Assistant or patient navigation role preferred

  • Experience within a Women’s Health Clinic or OB/GYN practice preferred

Licensure & Certifications

  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant required

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association required at the time of hire

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of prenatal care and obstetric procedures

  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to communicate compassionately and effectively with expectant mothers and families

  • Ability to work collaboratively with physicians, nurse midwives, and other healthcare professionals

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to coordinate multiple appointments, tests, procedures, and patient care needs

  • Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems

  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care

  • Ability to maintain accurate and timely patient documentation

  • Understanding of medical confidentiality, patient privacy, and applicable privacy requirements

  • Ability to recognize concerns that require escalation to an appropriate licensed healthcare provider

  • Commitment to providing an organized, supportive, and patient-centered prenatal care experience

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout clinic and patient care areas

  • Manual dexterity necessary to perform Medical Assistant responsibilities, including obtaining vital signs and assisting with procedures

  • Ability to lift and carry medical equipment and supplies as needed

  • Ability to perform routine clinical and administrative responsibilities throughout the workday

Work Environment

  • Work is performed primarily within a Women’s Health Clinic and OB/GYN practice environment.

  • Regular interaction with OB and prenatal patients, families, physicians, nurse midwives, healthcare providers, and clinic staff.

  • Work may be performed in examination rooms, clinical work areas, and administrative areas.

  • Requires frequent communication and coordination among patients and members of the healthcare team.

  • May require flexibility in scheduling based on patient care and clinic operational needs.
