Service Line Director, Oncology

Job Summary

The Service Line Director is responsible for operational leadership for the Oncology service line. Possesses overall managerial/operational responsibility for all aspects of Oncology services, including Physician Practice management, Radiation Therapy, Breast Health, and Infusion Therapy Clinic. The Service Line Director leads and supports in the development of business, financial, personnel, and marketing plans that foster growth, while meeting patient and provider expectations. Accountable for the quality of services and works closely with the Medical Director on all aspects of the program, including clinical outcomes and efficiency. Ensures all functions are in compliance with applicable regulatory guidelines and accrediting standards. Represents the Oncology service line within the Health System and the communities served. Observes and practices within the framework of the scope and standards for nurse/practice administrators. The Service Line Director performs in a manner that demonstrates the guiding values of Caring, Respect, Integrity, Partnership, Stewardship, and Excellence.

Core Duties:

  • Displays knowledge of current and future direction of areas of cancer treatment, especially as it relates to the application of new technology and innovations
  • Serves as a resource to senior management on strategic issues impacting the Oncology service line.
  • Prepares and implements a strategic plan; monitors and reports achievement of strategic and operational goals for the Practice and Infusion Center.
  • Demonstrates effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills. Ability to write succinct, well-organized reports and plans. Ability to present ideas and information to various levels of management and board committees.
  • Possesses an understanding of physician practice workflow processes and demonstrates the ability to analyze practice operational problems, develop effective techniques for resolution, drive needed change and achieve support for change. Adaptable to a rapidly changing health care environment.
  • Demonstrates and promotes systems thinking.
  • Establishes standards of job performance and holds staff accountable
  • Keeps management team, physicians and staff informed of changes which impact the current and future delivery of services.
  • Ensures competent staff.
  • Successfully research, analyze, and launch new projects to include the development of business plans, communication strategies, and mechanisms to evaluate and measure results. Results orientated.
  • Handle difficult people and tense situations with diplomacy and tact; identify potential conflict, bring disagreements into the open and help de-escalate them; encourage debate and open discussion and orchestrate win-win solutions. Conflict management.
  • Exhibits strong commitment to patient care and high-quality services and outcomes.
  • Serves as a strong customer advocate
  • Possesses knowledge and ensures compliance with organizational and regulatory standards, i.e. National Patient Safety Goals, Joint Commission, infection control practices, and other state and federal regulations, Commission on Cancer accreditation and other oncology specific measures
  • Provides a safe environment for employees to perform their work
  • Provides administrative direction to improve performance, based on monitoring and reporting of short and long-term outcomes.
  • Serves as a liaison for physicians, providers, families, and patients
  • Demonstrates prompt and immediate follow-up of all untoward events and/or negative outcomes occurring within the Oncology service line.
  • Monitors patient satisfaction with services
  • Monitors survey results. Communicates results to employees and explores ways to improve satisfaction with care and services
  • Maintains visibility and ongoing dialogue with physicians to address issues
  • Communicates effectively with employees. Creates an environment conducive to the development of clinical competence, self-confidence, professional growth, and job satisfaction.
  • Monitors and minimizes employee’s turnover
  • Represents the Oncology service line on various hospital, affiliate hospital and community committees, including the Patient and Family Advisory Council
  • Draws physicians and other team members into active and enthusiastic participation and in the successful implementation of strategies and plans based on the patient’s experience.
  • Analyze and interpret complex problems and develop reasonable courses of action that are consistent with the organizational mission and strategic plan.
  • Understands physician revenue cycle processes, including the ability to analyze, refine and improve these processes to maximize patient revenue
  • Develops forecasts, budgets, and performs basic financial analysis, and organizes data into meaningful information for decision-making
  • Directs business development to enhance the financial stability of the Oncology service line
  • Provides advice and recommendations in the capital budget planning process
  • Monitors supply expenses. Works with management team to resolve variances
  • Demonstrates innovation in the development and implementation of cost reduction strategies
  • Monitors productivity to ensure a balance of fiscal responsibility for the provision of services to patients and physicians.
  • Assists with the performance of marketing services and encourages participation in community needs assessments, educational programs, health screenings and promotion of overall health and wellness, resulting in a clear/positive public image of Oncology services for physicians and the community.

Promotes delivery of outreach programs and services to meet the needs of smaller communities and outlying regions

Director Level Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Develops, implements, and is accountable for operational plans, goals, and budgets across multiple related departments or service lines, or leads system-level responsibility for a key function.
  • Coordinates efforts across departments and leaders to drive operational efficiency and achieve goals and quality outcomes
  • Cultivates and develops future leadership
  • Responsible for employment decisions and performance management for management and professional-level personnel
  • Strives to achieve all Director level leadership accountabilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or Healthcare Management
  • Five years’ experience in middle or higher-level management
  • Relevant experience in oncology
  • Experience as a Physician Practice manager
