This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Technical Lead - Asterisk & Telephony based in India.
This is a senior technical leadership opportunity focused on architecting, building, and operating mission-critical voice infrastructure.
You will lead the evolution of Asterisk-based VoIP platforms across cloud and on-premise environments, with a strong focus on scalability and reliability.
The role combines deep hands-on expertise in SIP and telephony with architectural ownership and engineering leadership.
You will guide teams working on call routing, IVRs, automation, integrations, monitoring, and real-time communication systems.
You will also drive cloud telephony initiatives across AWS, GCP, or Azure while strengthening security, performance, and availability.
The position offers an opportunity to shape advanced voice capabilities, including analytics, conversational AI, and real-time audio pipelines.
You’ll collaborate closely with Product, DevOps, Security, and Networking teams to deliver resilient communication solutions at scale.
- Lead the architecture, development, deployment, and ongoing optimization of Asterisk-based VoIP platforms, including dial plans, IVRs, call routing, conferencing, and related voice services.
- Design and scale highly available telephony infrastructure integrating SIP trunks, codecs, monitoring systems, and real-time communication components.
- Guide engineering teams in developing and optimizing AGI, ARI, and AMI-based automation, custom call logic, and backend integrations.
- Lead cloud telephony deployments across AWS, GCP, and/or Azure, with responsibility for reliability, security, scalability, networking, and performance.
- Own technical direction for complex VoIP troubleshooting, including NAT traversal, QoS, SIP signaling, call quality, and infrastructure incidents.
- Collaborate with Product, DevOps, Security, and Networking teams to design and deliver robust end-to-end communication solutions.
- Mentor engineers and developers on Asterisk best practices, software quality, troubleshooting, system design, and architecture.
- Drive initiatives around telephony analytics, call-quality monitoring, proactive health checks, and operational visibility.
- Establish and maintain security and compliance practices covering areas such as TLS, SRTP, fraud prevention, and applicable telephony regulations.
- Maintain comprehensive technical documentation and promote knowledge sharing across the engineering organization.
- Support the evolution of voice infrastructure toward emerging technologies, including voicebots, conversational AI, real-time media processing, and AI-powered telephony integrations where applicable.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 10+ years of experience working with telephony and VoIP systems, including 7+ years of hands-on production experience with Asterisk PBX.
- At least 3 years of experience in technical leadership, managing engineering teams, projects, or technical initiatives within a telephony or VoIP environment.
- Deep knowledge of SIP, RTP, SRTP, IAX2, DAHDI, codec negotiation, and VoIP troubleshooting, including diagnosing call-quality issues.
- Strong scripting and development capabilities using Python and Bash, with hands-on experience with AGI, AMI, and ARI interfaces.
- Strong Linux administration skills and proficiency with CLI-based networking and system-debugging tools.
- Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure, particularly AWS, GCP, and/or Azure, including load balancing, networking, security, and reliability configurations.
- Hands-on experience with relational databases such as MySQL, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL, as well as REST API integrations.
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, Zabbix, or custom SIP monitoring solutions.
- Proficiency with packet-level troubleshooting and analysis using Wireshark, tcpdump, and similar tools.
- Strong architectural thinking, problem-solving, communication, mentoring, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to operate effectively in a remote environment while collaborating across engineering and cross-functional teams.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with Kamailio or OpenSIPS as SBCs or SIP routers.
- Familiarity with WebRTC, contact-center technologies, call recording, and compliance systems.
- Experience deploying containerized telephony solutions using Docker and Kubernetes.
- Exposure to compliance and regulatory frameworks such as PCI, HIPAA, GDPR, or CALEA.
- Experience with voicebot or conversational AI platforms integrated with Asterisk-based telephony systems.
- Familiarity with Speech-to-Text and Text-to-Speech technologies such as Deepgram, Google Speech, Amazon Polly, or comparable services.
- Basic knowledge of NLP and LLM technologies used in conversational AI.
- Experience with real-time RTP audio streaming, media handling, WebSockets, and integrations between telephony systems and AI/ML services.
- Exposure to building or supporting real-time voice pipelines combining SIP, RTP, WebSockets, and AI inference services.
