Job Description

About DESRI

DESRI (formerly D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments) is a market-leading owner and operator of renewable energy projects throughout the United States. We have acquired or developed approximately 13 gigawatts of contracted capacity across a portfolio of over 85 renewable energy projects in 24 states.

At DESRI, our culture is grounded in rigorous analytics and thoughtful risk-taking, with a strong emphasis on creativity, intellectual curiosity, and continuous improvement. We operate with lean teams that prioritize efficiency and minimize unnecessary bureaucracy, enabling individuals to take ownership and move quickly. We value open, constructive dialogue and believe it leads to better outcomes. Above all, we are driven to go the extra mile and support one another, fostering a collaborative environment built on accountability, integrity, and care.

About the role

DESRI seeks talented, intellectually curious, and highly motivated students to join our Summer 2027 internship program. The internship is a 10-week program that runs from June through August, depending on academic calendars.

The Commercial Internship serves DESRI’s Finance & Acquisitions and Strategy teams and offers interns the opportunity to contribute to the investment, financing, strategic analysis, and growth of DESRI’s renewable energy platform. Interns will work alongside experienced professionals on high-impact projects involving solar, battery storage, and wind assets across the United States.

Throughout the summer, interns will work closely with mentors and project managers who will support their professional development. Interns will have opportunities to collaborate across DESRI, participate in learning and intern events, visit an operating renewable energy asset, and present their work to colleagues at the end of the summer.

What you'll do

Depending on project needs and interests, you may support work across the following teams:

  • Finance & Acquisitions: You may help evaluate investment opportunities by building and maintaining financial analyses and models used to assess project returns, capital structures, investment risks, and potential value creation opportunities. You may also support due diligence and transaction processes related to acquisitions, debt and tax equity financings, asset sales, and projects across various stages of development, construction, and operation.
  • Strategy: You may support DESRI’s market strategy and new project origination decisions through power market research, industry and competitive analysis, and quantitative and qualitative analyses. Projects may include evaluating electricity market fundamentals, researching renewable energy and energy storage demand opportunities, developing market and competitive intelligence, and synthesizing insights to support business planning and investment decisions.

Across assignments, you’ll have the opportunity to develop analytical, financial, and strategic skills while learning how commercial decisions are made across DESRI’s renewable energy platform.

Qualifications

  • We’re interested in highly analytical, accomplished students with a demonstrated interest in renewable energy, investing, finance, strategy, energy markets, or related fields.
  • Intellectually curious individuals with strong written and verbal communication skills, analytical acumen, attention to detail, and an entrepreneurial mindset will excel in this role.
  • A record of academic and/or professional achievement is required.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively within small teams, manage multiple priorities, and approach unfamiliar problems thoughtfully is vital to this role.
  • Financial modeling or other quantitative experience, preferably using Excel, is helpful but not required.
  • Preference will be given to undergraduate and graduate students who are in their final year of full-time study following the internship.
  • Undergraduate interns will be paid $6,000 per month with a $5,000 housing stipend. Graduate interns will be paid $10,000 per month with a $5,000 housing stipend.
