Job Description

Lighting & AV Systems Designer (CAD, DMX, Pixel)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Lighting & AV Systems Designer (CAD, DMX, Pixel) based in Canada.

We are seeking a hands-on Lighting and AV Systems Designer to create accurate technical documentation for architectural lighting, signage, and entertainment projects across North America. In this role, you will transform design markups into complete installation-ready drawing packages, detailed wiring diagrams, and costed bills of materials. You will work closely with the design lead while taking ownership of technical deliverables from initial documentation through installation support. Beyond drafting, you will troubleshoot real-world challenges involving low-voltage systems, LED pixel data, DMX addressing, and controller configuration. Approximately 40% of your time will be dedicated to supporting installers by phone and turning recurring technical questions into practical documentation. This remote opportunity suits a technically confident professional who enjoys combining CAD expertise, problem-solving, customer support, and continuous improvement in a small, collaborative team.

Accountabilities
  • Develop technical design packages: Translate design lead markups into accurate wiring diagrams, single-line diagrams, fixture and cable layouts, controller and addressing schedules, pathway drawings, and assembly details using AutoCAD.

  • Prepare bills of materials: Build complete, costed bills of materials within CPQ and ERP systems, accounting for all required components, including connectors, power supply units, amplifiers, wiring, and related accessories.

  • Provide installer technical support: Handle incoming support calls and troubleshoot installation issues involving pixel data faults, DMX addressing, voltage drop, power injection, and controller configuration.

  • Resolve real-world installation challenges: Investigate discrepancies between drawings and site conditions, explain technical solutions clearly, and help electricians and installers complete projects successfully.

  • Maintain documentation accuracy: Ensure drawings, cable schedules, signal-flow documentation, and related technical deliverables meet established standards and are suitable for practical implementation.

  • Create installer-facing resources: Identify recurring technical questions and support issues, then develop clear documentation and guidance to reduce repeat calls and improve installation efficiency.

  • Collaborate with design leadership: Work closely with the design lead to review markups, validate technical details, maintain consistent design standards, and improve the quality of project deliverables.

  • Leverage AI tools in daily work: Integrate AI tools into appropriate workflows to improve productivity, documentation, technical problem-solving, and overall work quality.

Requirements:
  • Relevant industry experience: At least three years in a design or drafting role with an AV integrator, lighting integrator, or systems integration company, producing technical drawing packages that were used for actual installations.

  • AutoCAD proficiency: Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD and the ability to produce accurate, professional technical drawings independently. Experience with Revit or D-Tools is an advantage.

  • Low-voltage electrical fundamentals: Solid understanding of DC voltage drop, power injection, power supply sizing, and low-voltage LED system design. Technical knowledge will be assessed during the hiring process.

  • Practical systems knowledge: Experience creating signal-flow diagrams, rack drawings, cable schedules, wiring diagrams, or comparable technical documentation, with the ability to explain and defend design decisions to installers.

  • Troubleshooting capabilities: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to diagnose technical issues, identify root causes, and communicate practical solutions under time pressure.

  • Confident communication: Clear, professional phone communication skills and the ability to support electricians and installers working on active job sites, including situations involving poor connections, schedule pressure, and urgent technical issues.

  • AI proficiency: Regular use of AI tools in professional workflows, with the ability to demonstrate how these tools contribute to work quality and efficiency.

  • Availability and schedule: Full availability from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.

  • Work authorization: Legally authorized to work in the United States or Canada.

  • Preferred lighting and control expertise: Familiarity with DMX512, SPI pixel protocols such as WS2811, UCS, or TM18xx, or platforms and systems including Advatek, Falcon, PixLite, ENTTEC, Pharos, and Madrix. These skills are advantageous but not mandatory.

  • Application requirements: Include the word “PIXEL” in the first line of your cover letter, attach a wiring diagram or signal-flow drawing you personally produced, and provide a link to a two-minute video explaining voltage drop on a 12V LED run to an electrician unfamiliar with the concept. Applications missing either the drawing or the video will not be reviewed.

Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation: Annual salary of USD $55,000–$70,000, depending on experience.

  • Fully remote work: Work remotely from an eligible location in the United States or Canada.

  • Consistent daytime schedule: Fixed working hours from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.

  • No on-call requirements: A predictable schedule without on-call duties.

  • End-to-end project ownership: Take responsibility for technical design packages, with review and guidance from the design lead.

  • Diverse project portfolio: Contribute to real-world architectural lighting, signage, and entertainment lighting projects across North America.

  • Direct impact and visibility: Work within a small team with minimal organizational layers, where your drawings, troubleshooting solutions, and documentation improvements can directly shape standard practices.

  • Technical development: Build on your existing CAD and low-voltage expertise while gaining exposure to specialized lighting controls, pixel protocols, and installation challenges.
