Job Description

Job Title: Children’s Librarian
Grade: 6
Department: Library
Reports to: Head of Children’s Services
SUMMARY

The Children’s Librarian assists in the administration of the children’s department of the Library. Selects and maintains various collections within the department. Develops and presents programs for the children and their parents. Works independently under the direction of the Head of Children’s Services.

HOURS

Seven (7) hours per day, thirty-five (35) hours per week, Monday through Saturday, with no more than two (2) days from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. or 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and the remaining days shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with one (1) hour for lunch or dinner. Assigned to a rotation schedule for work on every third Saturday commencing with the Saturday following Labor Day through June 30th.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Selects and maintains various collections within the department.

  2. Develops and presents programs for children and their parents.

  3. Works independently under the direction of the Head of Children’s Services.

  4. Performs reference services for children and adults.

  5. Prepares bibliographies.

  6. Develops and/or assists with community/school outreach initiatives.

  7. Maintains close relationship with other departments and provides backup as needed.

  8. Provides readers advisory services for children and adults.

  9. Creates public relations materials such as flyers, press releases, eNewsletters, and social media regarding programs and services in the Children’s Department.

  10. Maintains statistics as requested by Head of Children’s Services and Director.

  11. Takes part in continuing education, professional development activities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  1. An understanding of the principles of early childhood including; children’s approach to learning, knowledge of developmental stages about reading and listening.

  2. Ability to relate to children, adults, the education community, parents and colleagues.

  3. Leadership skills, the ability to speak to groups including parents, children, and teachers.

  4. Communicates verbally, one-on-one, in groups, and in writing in a courteous, professional and tactful manner.

  5. Strong knowledge of children’s literature, including media.

  6. Understands and is familiar with library principles, policies, methods, practices, and procedures.

  7. Proficiency in computer technology and software systems as applied to library operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Knowledge in library services to children, including collection development, readers advisory, and programming.

  2. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, supervisors, officials of other agencies, and the general public.

  3. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  1. Graduate degree in library science from an ALA accredited college or university.

  2. Two years’ experience in library services.

  3. Experience with library children services preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  1. Ability to sit and stand for extended period.

  2. Ability to lift objects of 30-lbs; pushing and pulling, reaching for books on shelves, sitting and kneeling on floor and climbing on stools.

  3. Ability to speak in a clear and discernable manner.

  4. Ability to see and read books, reference materials, and equipment instructions.

  5. Ability to move freely within the building and outside during special activities and other programming.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

In accordance with the working agreement between the Town of Southington and he United Public Services Employees Union, Local 424-Unit 35
