This is a fully remote, mission-driven engineering opportunity focused on building and improving large-scale civic technology systems designed to engage and empower voters. The role sits within a collaborative volunteer engineering environment where developers contribute to both frontend and backend systems using modern web technologies. You will work on impactful, production-grade applications that support high-traffic use cases during critical election cycles. This is a flexible, part-time opportunity that combines technical depth with civic impact, allowing you to apply your skills toward strengthening democratic participation.
- Contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of scalable web applications using React and/or Python (Django).
- Work on both frontend and backend systems, supporting feature development, bug fixes, and system improvements.
- Collaborate with distributed engineering teams in weekly meetings to review code, discuss architecture, and plan tasks.
- Install, configure, and actively contribute to existing codebases across mobile web and API server components.
- Tackle both small engineering tasks and larger, multi-step development projects aligned with platform needs.
- Participate in peer collaboration, including occasional pair programming and technical problem-solving sessions.
- Support ongoing platform stability and readiness for high-impact events such as election cycles.
- Strong experience in software engineering with proficiency in ReactJS, Python, or Django (full-stack experience preferred).
- Ability to independently complete intermediate to advanced engineering tasks and manage multi-step projects.
- Availability of at least 8 hours per week, with participation in core team hours (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. US time).
- Based in the United States and eligible to participate in a fully remote volunteer environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a commitment to writing clean, maintainable, and reliable code.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills for working effectively in distributed teams.
- Self-motivated mindset with a passion for technology and mission-driven work.
- Previous academic or professional background in Computer Science or Engineering is a plus but not required.
- Opportunity to contribute to a high-impact civic technology platform supporting voter engagement across the United States.
- Fully remote volunteer role with flexible scheduling (minimum 8 hours per week required).
- Hands-on experience with modern technologies including ReactJS and Python/Django in a production environment.
- Collaboration with experienced engineers in a structured, team-based development setting.
- Exposure to large-scale, real-world engineering challenges during high-traffic election periods.
- Opportunities for skill development, mentorship, and technical growth.
- Chance to expand professional network within a mission-driven engineering community.
- Meaningful work contributing directly to civic engagement and democratic participation.
