Design Specialist II

Job Summary: The candidate will report to the hiring manager and take ownership of designing comprehensive BAS submittal packages, including detailed network architectures, point-to-point wiring schematics, and optimized Sequences of Operations (SOO) for complex HVAC and industrial control systems. Utilizing AutoCAD and Visio, this specialist will interpret technical specifications to select equipment and develop Bills of Material while collaborating with project managers to resolve design discrepancies through the RFI process.

Responsibilities:

  • Design Industrial Building Automation Controls projects to meet scope of work and budget as defined by contract documents and sales estimate ensuring equipment compatibility.
  • Provide AutoCAD/Visio Design Tool labor and direction as required to complete submittals and other engineered documents accurately and professionally.
  • Develop comprehensive BAS submittal packages, including detailed riser diagrams, network architecture, and physical point-to-point wiring schematics for HVAC and electrical systems.
  • Interpret project documents, estimate, and other information as available to select the proper equipment to achieve the scope of work required in the most effective and functional manner.
  • Completion of Sequences of Operations (SOO) and be able to determine if written SOO's will meet system requirements.
  • Complete Bill of Material for every design project.
  • Advanced knowledge in BACnet MSTP/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, and LonWorks protocol integration.
  • Maintain clear documentation of design systems, wiring diagrams and software configurations.
  • Proficiency in engineering design software or drafting tools such as AutoCAD and Microsoft Visio CDT.
  • Ability to design large projects with some deviation using standard tools, products, and practices.
  • Develop system designs for BAS, including load calculations, equipment selection, and integration of various control systems.
  • Assist Sales team during estimation/bid phase of the project by providing design support.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to assist in generating Request for Information (RFIs) to clarify design issues and recommend appropriate solutions as necessary.
  • Must be able to find discrepancies in plans and specifications and write RFI's to get clarification when discrepancies exist.
  • Must have good knowledge of HVAC systems, including unitary equipment (RTU's, FCU's, VAV boxes) and larger systems (AHU's, DOAS units, MUA units), Hydronic systems including valve sizing, Chiller Plants (air-cooled and water cooled), Cooling Towers, Boiler plants including Heat Exchangers, etc.
  • Independently complete all specific design responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Accurately forecast necessary labor required to design a complete project and track this over time to achieve budget and forecast goals.
  • Provide support for ongoing service engineering and support for existing building systems.
  • Suggest/recommend new products that provide better functionality and value to projects, clients, etc.
  • As assigned develop and maintain a library of engineering standards for both Bosch Building Technologies and the industry.
  • Facilitate with external customers/vendors as required to ensure accurate and timely engineering.
  • Assist in managing the timeline, budget, and coordination of projects.
  • Provide support to Bosch Building Technologies and other contractors to solve building operating issues that go beyond the control's operation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or a related technical field. Prior work experience (8+ years) in the building automation field can supersede a degree.
  • 4+ years' experience in building automation systems controls or building automation management systems.
  • 4+ years' experience producing BAS submittals in any BAS platform,
  • 4+ years' experience working with AutoCAD and/or Visio.
  • 2+ years' experience designing and engineering HVAC control systems, including developing sequence of operations and equipment selection.
  • 2+ years' experience with generating and managing RFIs (Requests for Information) to resolve design issues.
  • Proficiency with reading and creating layout drawings to guide system installation (e.g., sensor locations, panel placement).
  • Experience interacting with external stakeholders, such as consulting engineers, contractors, and building owners.
  • Experience with developing Bills of Material (BOM).
  • Mastery of M&E plan interpretation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in electrical, mechanical, or a related technical field. Extensive (12+ years' experience) work experience in the building automation field can supersede a degree.
  • 7+ years of experience in building automation with a thorough understanding of HVAC controls operations, particularly within commercial (data centers, hospitals, etc.) or industrial facilities.
  • 7+ years of experience of assisting in project estimation, budgeting, and scheduling for BAS components.
  • 2+ years of experience programming within the Tridium/Niagara framework, Spyder tool, EIKON, EC-gfxProgram, and/or Controller Configuration Tool.
  • Experience Proposing cost-effective technical solutions.
  • Experience maintaining or contributing to internal standards, libraries, or best practices for system design and engineering.
  • Background in both design and ongoing support/service engineering for installed building systems

  • The office is clean, orderly, properly lighted and ventilated. Noise levels are considered low to moderate

  • Working Hours: This position generally works Monday- Friday, overtime and on call when necessary
