The City of Coronado is Accepting Applications for the Position of
Marketing Assistant
The Department
The mission of the Coronado Public Library is to “meet the informational, recreational, and cultural needs of the community and promote reading, life-long learning, and the pursuit of knowledge.”
The Coronado Library was founded in 1890. At the current Orange Avenue location, the original building dates to 1909 and is still in use as the Spreckels Reading Room within a 40,000 square foot remodeled and expanded state-of-the-art library facility. Located across from Spreckels Park, the library is at the heart of Coronado.
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:
- Coordinate department-specific communications efforts and assist leadership in developing and maintaining communication plans, procedures, and standards.
- Plan and develop marketing plans for the promotion of programs and events.
- Inform the public about departmental services and initiatives that serve a diverse community for public awareness, participation, and equitable access to services.
- Develop and maintain content for the department’s webpage and social media platforms, monitor engagement, and respond to public comments and inquiries. Elevate complaints or sensitive inquiries to leadership.
- Maintain imagery from the department’s events, activities, and projects for use in media, promotional materials, and manage a photo library for use in publications and digital platforms.
- Produce promotional material for programs and seasonal events, including but not limited to: flyers, posters, invitations, tickets, info-marks, programs, certificates, souvenirs, business cards, and stationery.
- Prepare layouts for promotional and informational materials, publications, posters, projected visual aids, displays, and other projects.
- Create a variety of display and visual aid materials such as signage, posters, charts, and graphs.
- Prepare two and three-dimensional exhibits and displays.
- Prepare mural-size backgrounds or illustrations, props, and other items for displays, films, slide shows, and live programs produced by City staff.
- Utilize an array of computer graphic design software tools and archive electronic files created.
- Maintain inventory of paper, printing supplies, laminates, and specialty items.
- Participate in coordinating special events; contact vendors for catering, sound systems, lighting, set designs, and other required services.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
At least two (2) years of increasingly responsible marketing and communications experience.
Education/Training:
Equivalent to an associate degree or certificate program in marketing, communication, or graphic design.
- A rich benefits package contributes to the total compensation value. Benefits include a monthly cafeteria allotment of $2,168 voluntary retirement savings/deferred compensation, tuition reimbursement, group term life, short-term and long-term disability coverage, an employee assistance program, and more.
- The Retirement Benefit Formula for Classic CalPERS hired prior to January 1, 2013, is Members is 3% at 60. The current employee contribution rate is 9.5%.
- The Retirement Benefit Formula for PEPRA CalPERS Members, hired after January 1, 2013, is 2% at 62. The current employee contribution rate is 7.50%.
- As part of ensuring our employees maintain a work/life balance, employees earn 144 hours of Annual Leave per year for the first 5 years. After 5 years, the accrual rate increases.
- The City provides Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance in an amount equal to a one-time annual salary or $50,000, whichever is greater, at no cost to the employee.
- The City provides short- and long-term disability insurance equal to 66 2/3% of income. Employees that earn over the maximum benefit of $5,000/month available under the long-term disability plan, have the option to purchase enhanced long-term disability insurance.
- The City provides up to $2,000 per fiscal year for reimbursement of directly related costs of tuition, school fees, books, and required materials for approved courses and professional development opportunities. Student Loan Repayment can be used under this benefit.
- Longevity Pay; bonus starting at 5 years and every 5 years after.
- Lateral Vacation Service Credit, effective January 1, 2023, employees shall be given credit for prior verifiable public service employment for annual leave accrual rates.
