Job Description

Are you a big fan of dirt and moving it around? How about a lot of dirt? Northern Improvement is looking for skilled dirt operators with experience in scrapers, off-road trucks, compactors, dozers, and/or blades for our Heavy Industrial crew! The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of multiple pieces of construction equipment. This crew primarily works at the power plants and mines, doing heavy earth-moving. Travel out of Bismarck is required, depending on the job site.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Operate various other pieces of construction equipment used in earth-moving operations (ex. Scrapers, Articulated off-road trucks, compactors, dozers, etc.)
  • Operate construction equipment in accordance with company procedures and safety regulations
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment
  • Operate the equipment in the right direction and angles to prevent accidents and damage to property
  • Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment, and lubricate, refill, and clean equipment as necessary
  • Use various pieces of equipment to perform fine grading and finishing, sloping and banking, backfilling, demolition, ditching, loading, excavating, and stockpiling
  • Operate equipment in various situations, maintaining proper awareness of one’s surroundings
  • Report the need for large repairs to the appropriate parties
  • Must be safety-oriented at all times
  • Work respectfully with supervisor staff, crew members, and other personnel on the job site
  • All other duties as assigned, delegated, or necessary for operations

Qualifications

  • Strong work ethic (dependable, excellent attendance, trustworthy)
  • Minimum two years of operating construction equipment
  • Experience with multiple pieces of construction equipment is a plus
  • Must have a reliable means of transportation
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment urine drug test and comply with drug and alcohol policies during employment

Working conditions

  • Outdoor environment subject to changing conditions and temperatures
  • Occasional exposures to fumes, dust, odors, heights, and loud noises
  • May be required to work 60+ hours, 6 days a week
  • Travel out of Bismarck is required, depending on the job site.

Physical requirements

  • Verbal, auditory, and written capabilities to effectively communicate in an articulate manner
  • Clarity of vision at varying distances to perform various work assignments
  • Standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized tools and equipment
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally
  • Occasional bending, kneeling, or crouching
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling object(s) weighing up to 50 pounds
