Class: Non-Exempt, Full-Time July 2026

Location: Merriam

Reports to: Senior Manager of Facilities

Pay Rate: $22-27/hr

Position Summary: The Facilities Technician works closely with the Senior Manager of Facilities to maintain a safe, clean, and well-functioning environment for the staff, volunteers, visitors, and animals at Great Plains SPCA. This position performs preventative maintenance, repairs, facility improvements, grounds maintenance, and equipment upkeep while supporting the daily operations of the organization.

The ideal candidate is dependable, self-motivated, mechanically inclined, and enjoys solving problems in a fast-paced environment. They take pride in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming facility and are passionate about supporting the mission of helping homeless animals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and improvements to buildings, grounds, equipment, and facility systems.
  • Respond to maintenance requests and complete work orders accurately and efficiently.
  • Inspect the facility regularly and identify maintenance or safety concerns before they become larger issues.
  • Assist with repairs involving plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, painting, and general maintenance.
  • Maintain facility equipment, tools, and vehicles to ensure they remain in good working condition.
  • Maintain inventory of parts, supplies, tools, and maintenance materials and notify the Senior Manager when replenishment is needed.
  • Assist with facility improvement projects and renovations as assigned.
  • Coordinate with vendors during scheduled maintenance or repair work and communicate project updates to the Senior Manager of Facilities.
  • Assist with maintaining building security systems and responding to facility emergencies or security alarms as directed.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation and respond to facility emergencies when needed.
  • Ensure work areas remain organized, clean, and safe.
  • Provide day-to-day direction and support to the Part-Time Cleaner to help maintain organization-wide cleanliness standards.
  • Report facility, maintenance, or safety concerns promptly to the Senior Manager of Facilities.
  • Maintain flexibility and assist with other facility or shelter operations as organizational needs change.
  • Participate in all shelter duties as assigned, including daily animal handling, while embracing the organization's mission and commitment to compassionate care.
  • Comply with all Great Plains SPCA safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Three or more years of building maintenance, facilities, construction, or related experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of commercial building maintenance systems.
  • Experience performing basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, HVAC, or mechanical repairs.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record and proof of insurance.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to organize work, prioritize competing tasks, and work independently with minimal supervision


Work Conditions

  • Schedule: Monday through Friday 8-5 or 9-6 during initial training. Schedule may include one weekend day in the future.
  • Work hours may vary based on organizational needs and emergency situations.
  • Must be comfortable working around dogs and cats of all sizes, ages, and temperaments.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting, carrying, reaching, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and team lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations.
  • Potential exposure to loud noise, cleaning chemicals, zoonotic diseases, and occasionally fractious animals.
