Position Summary

The Director, Information Technology is accountable for the technology operations, reliability, and security of HFMA’s systems and infrastructure, enabling the organization’s business capabilities and services. This role provides strategic leadership across all IT domains, including infrastructure, cybersecurity, business software solutions, and enterprise data operations, while overseeing a managed service provider (MSP) partnership responsible for helpdesk support and infrastructure management.

In partnership with executive leadership, this position shapes and executes HFMA’s overall technology strategy, balancing long-term architecture vision with operational excellence. The Director directly manages a team of five: a .NET Engineer, a Salesforce Engineer, a Senior Data Engineer, a Technical Project Manager, and an IT Coordinator, and holds accountability for MSP performance and alignment with organizational standards.

ResponsibilitiesIT Strategy and Business Planning
  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive IT strategy and annual plan/budget aligned with HFMA’s organizational mission, goals, and operational needs across the near, mid, and long term.
  • Develops and manages the IT budget, including capital and operating expenses, vendor contracts, and MSP service agreements; identifies opportunities to optimize cost and performance.
  • Builds strong relationships with business leaders across the enterprise; translates strategic priorities into IT dependencies, initiatives, and investment plans.
  • Establishes governance processes to identify, prioritize, and implement IT-related needs in accordance with organizational and leadership priorities; implements KPIs, OKRs, and SLA frameworks to measure and report on IT performance.
  • Stays current on emerging technologies and industry trends; evaluates and recommends adoption of innovations that advance HFMA’s competitive capabilities and employee productivity.
  • Infrastructure Management and Maintenance
  • Provides strategic oversight for HFMA’s infrastructure environment, including cloud-based servers, cloud services, networks, and end-user computing platforms; ensures infrastructure is reliable, scalable, and cost-effective.
  • Develops and maintains infrastructure roadmaps including lifecycle planning, hardware/software refresh cycles, and capacity forecasting; ensures timely patching, updates, and maintenance across all systems.
  • Directs the IT Coordinator in managing day-to-day infrastructure changes, upgrades, and scheduling; ensures documentation and change management processes are followed consistently.
  • Monitors infrastructure performance and availability; establishes baseline metrics, alert thresholds, and escalation processes to proactively address issues before they impact operations.
  • Leads business continuity and disaster recovery planning; develops, tests, and maintains protocols to minimize disruption to operations in the event of outage, failure, or data loss.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of infrastructure architecture, configurations, integrations, and operational procedures.
  • IT Security
  • Develops and maintains HFMA’s information security program, including policies, standards, and controls that protect organizational data, systems, and networks against internal and external threats.
  • Establishes and maintains mechanisms to proactively identify, audit, track, report, and mitigate technology and data security risks; evaluates HFMA’s adherence to applicable regulatory and federal security requirements.
  • Performs regular security architecture reviews of systems, networks, and integrations; leads incident response planning and ensures staff are prepared to execute in the event of a security event.
  • Manages delivery of security awareness programs and training for HFMA staff to minimize risk from phishing, social engineering, and other human-vector threats.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive organizational data and upholds a security-first culture across all IT functions and vendor relationships.
  • MSP Oversight and Vendor Management
  • Serves as the primary liaison and accountability owner for HFMA’s managed service provider, overseeing helpdesk operations, infrastructure management, and contracted service delivery against defined SLAs.
  • Conducts regular performance reviews with MSP leadership; tracks metrics, escalates issues, and ensures alignment with HFMA’s operational standards and security requirements.
  • Manages contracts, service renewals, and cost negotiations with the MSP and other key technology vendors; maintains business and technical relationships to optimize value and manage risk.
  • Establishes escalation pathways and communication protocols between HFMA staff and the MSP to ensure timely resolution of helpdesk tickets and infrastructure issues.
  • Conducts periodic user satisfaction reviews to measure quality of support services and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Business Software Solutions and Data OperationsSoftware Solution Strategy and Architecture
  • Works to understand business needs and constraints and designs an overall architecture and strategy to guide software solution selection, implementation, and long-term evolution.
  • Proactively identifies opportunities to improve business efficiency or performance through technology; negotiates with business owners on priority and approach for proposed solutions.
  • Leads software selection efforts resulting in development of a software ecosystem that is high-performing and cost-efficient; evaluates build-vs-buy tradeoffs and oversees procurement and contract negotiation.
  • Designs and manages technical implementation and integration of new software solutions to meet functional, transactional, and analytical needs; sets standards for interoperability across the ecosystem.
  • Maintains current knowledge of solutions, tools, and working processes to ensure that HFMA benefits from industry and technology advancements.
  • Software Solution Management
  • Designs, creates, and maintains appropriate architectures to ensure that the ecosystem of software solutions meets business needs for functionality, transactional integration, performance, maintainability, availability, security, cost, and business intelligence.
  • Creates and maintains accurate documentation of software architecture and integrations as built; develops, documents, implements, and enforces standards for ecosystem components and integration patterns.
  • Plans and oversees maintenance of existing solutions including scheduling updates and patching; monitors and manages system performance to proactively address issues.
  • Performs regular architecture and system reviews to ensure that security goals are met across the software ecosystem.
  • Maintains business and technical relationships with vendor representatives to manage performance, issues, service agreements, and contracts.
  • Develops and publishes appropriate documentation and training to assist users in making the most of available solutions and minimizing day-to-day dependence on IT for routine operations.
  • Enterprise Data Platform and Analytics
  • Leads the development, build-out, and ongoing operation of HFMA’s Microsoft Fabric environment, establishing it as the central enterprise data platform supporting reporting, analytics, and business intelligence across the organization.
  • Directs the design and implementation of data pipelines that ingest, transform, and deliver data from source systems (including the .NET platform, Salesforce, and other business systems) into the Fabric environment using a medallion architecture (bronze, silver, and gold layers).
  • Partners with the Senior Data Engineer to define data engineering standards, pipeline development practices, and data quality frameworks; ensures the platform is scalable, maintainable, and aligned with organizational data governance policies.
  • Establishes and enforces data governance standards including data definitions, ownership, lineage, quality controls, and access management across the enterprise data ecosystem.
  • Develops the organization’s data and analytics roadmap, identifying opportunities to create business value through improved access to data, self-service reporting capabilities, and advanced analytics.
  • Ensures data security and privacy controls are embedded into the data platform architecture, including appropriate role-based access, data masking, and audit logging.
  • Project Management and Delivery
  • Partners with the Technical Project Manager to analyze, prioritize, and schedule IT work associated with business needs; ensures projects are planned against organizational priorities and delivered on time and within scope.
  • Coordinates delivery across multiple concurrent IT efforts to avoid conflicts, resource constraints, and scheduling gaps; applies Agile frameworks and tools to manage team workload and velocity.
  • Ensures strong communication between technical teams and business stakeholders throughout active projects; proactively manages expectations around timelines, risks, and delivery plans.
  • Drives adoption of continuous improvement through metrics-based retrospectives and process refinement; measures and shares impact of service improvements across the department.
  • Team Leadership
  • Directly manages a team of five: a .NET Engineer, a Salesforce Engineer, a Senior Data Engineer, a Technical Project Manager, and an IT Coordinator; designs team structure and proactively evaluates gaps and opportunities to optimize skills and capacity.
  • Provides mentoring, coaching, and individualized development opportunities to each team member based on their role, goals, and career aspirations.
  • Oversees work assignments and reviews performance against goals; implements improvements to address gaps and recognizes high performance.
  • Recruits and onboards team members and vendor partners to ensure the necessary skills, competencies, and capacity are available to meet anticipated organizational needs.
  • Fosters an environment that encourages business focus, collaboration, innovation, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
  • Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
  • 10+ years of progressive IT experience; 5+ years in a leadership or management role with direct oversight of technical teams and IT operations.
  • Demonstrated experience with IT security program management, including risk assessment, policy development, compliance, and incident response planning.
  • Demonstrated experience managing or overseeing an MSP relationship, including SLA accountability, helpdesk governance, and vendor performance management.
  • Experience designing and managing infrastructure environments, including networks, servers, cloud services, and end-user computing; familiarity with hybrid cloud architectures is a plus.
  • Experience with enterprise data platform architecture and data engineering concepts, including ETL/ELT pipelines, data warehousing, and business intelligence; familiarity with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, or similar platforms is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with .NET application platforms and Salesforce CRM; ability to provide technical direction to engineers in these environments without requiring hands-on development.
  • Experience with IT service management (ITSM) frameworks and toolsets; comfort with Agile project management methodologies and related tools.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills; ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to build rapport and trust with staff at all levels of the organization and with external vendors.
  • Metrics-driven mindset with a track record of using data to make decisions and demonstrate IT’s value to the organization.
  • Experience with data governance, data hygiene, and Salesforce-driven operations is a plus.
  • Prior experience in a nonprofit, association, or mission-driven organization is a plus.
