What You’ll Do
As a Lactation Consultant Registered Nurse, you'll provide compassionate, evidence-based lactation support to expectant and new parents across both inpatient and outpatient settings. You'll educate families on breastfeeding, help resolve feeding challenges, and collaborate with physicians, nurses, and community resources to promote positive maternal and infant outcomes. In addition to direct patient care, you'll serve as a trusted breastfeeding resource for hospital staff, oversee breast pump rentals and retail services, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives that enhance the overall patient experience.
Lactation Consultant RN Job Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive lactation consultations and breastfeeding support to inpatient and outpatient mothers.

Conduct daily bedside lactation rounds and assess breastfeeding progress.

Educate expectant and new parents through individual and group breastfeeding training sessions.

Assess and resolve breastfeeding challenges while developing individualized care plans.

Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary care teams to coordinate patient care.

Perform follow-up phone consultations to support breastfeeding success after discharge.

Connect families with community resources, including WIC, private lactation consultants, and support groups.

Oversee breast pump rentals and the retail sale of breastfeeding-related equipment and supplies.

Maintain accurate documentation, prepare reports, and participate in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives.

Serve as a breastfeeding resource and educator for hospital staff while participating in community outreach and educational programs.

Required Qualifications

Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Indiana, maintained in good standing.

Graduate of an accredited nursing program.

Minimum of two years of clinical experience in mother/baby nursing, including newborn intensive care (NICU).

Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification, or the ability to obtain certification within two years of hire.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification and any additional certifications required by the department.

In-depth knowledge of lactation principles, breastfeeding management, and evidence-based practices.

Ability to educate and coach expectant and new parents through individual and group instruction.

Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to effectively support patients, families, physicians, and healthcare teams.

Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Strong organizational, analytical, and documentation skills with attention to detail.

Knowledge of community breastfeeding resources and appropriate referral processes.

Ability to work effectively with Mother/Baby, NICU, Pediatrics, and interdisciplinary care teams.

Proficiency in using educational materials and audiovisual teaching tools.

Ability to work in a fast-paced patient care environment with frequent changes in priorities and potential exposure to biohazards.

Commitment to maintaining required competencies, regulatory compliance, and organizational standards.

Within 5 years of employment as an RN, obtain a BSN or certification in your area of specialty
