We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Junior Assistant Controller to join our leadership team in Phoenix, Arizona. This position plays a critical role in supporting the financial operations of a growing commercial HVAC and plumbing company. The Assistant Controller will work closely with the Controller, executive leadership, project managers, and operations teams to ensure accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and efficient accounting processes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Assist in managing daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activities.
  • Assist and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Support month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Assist with construction job cost accounting and project profitability analysis.
  • Prepare and monitor Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and reporting.
  • Monitor cash flow and assist with financial forecasting.
  • Support annual budgeting and planning processes.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and internal controls.
  • Assist with audits, tax filings, and financial reviews.
  • Collaborate with project managers and operations teams to review project costs, billing, and change orders.
  • Analyze financial trends and provide recommendations to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
  • Develop and improve accounting procedures and reporting processes.
  • Mentor accounting and payroll staff as assigned.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in construction, mechanical contracting, HVAC, plumbing, or a related industry.
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting and job costing.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience preparing financial statements and account reconciliations.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with Bluebeam, Sage Intacct, Sage Expense, or similar construction accounting software.
  • Experience with certified payroll reporting.
  • Experience with multi-location accounting.
  • Knowledge of Arizona and Texas construction and contractor regulations.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Teams, Bluebeam, and Outlook.
  • Strong multitasking abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong integrity and professional ethics.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with executives, managers, and field personnel.
