Engineering Technician III - Design in Fairfax, Virginia at Fairfax Water

Under general supervision of the Supervisor, Water Main Design, performs advanced engineering
computations, design, and drafting of water mains and related facilities.
Responsibilities:

Performs advanced engineering computations, design, and drafting of water mains and related facilities. Responsibilities include:

• Conducts field investigations to identify routing for proposed water mains and making design-related recommendations.
• Prepares preliminary cost estimates for proposed water main installation projects.
• Researches existing records, including plans, as-built drawings, maps, and otheravailable information to support project development.
• Performs calculations using field survey data for the design and drafting of water
  main installation projects.
• Prepares advanced design and drafting of water main plans and profiles in AutoCADin accordance with Fairfax Water and Virginia Department of Health standards.
• Prepares plans and details for specialty water main appurtenances, including control and meter vaults, and develops maintenance of traffic plans as required.
• Prepares quantity take-offs from project plans and computing detailed cost estimates for water main installation projects.
• Prepares purchase requisitions and other project-related information and entering in SAP Enterprise Resource Planning software.
• Prepares and submits permit packages for the Virginia Department of Transportation and other regulatory agencies.
• Coordinates design with outside agencies, utility companies, and others.
• Coordinates with the Construction Department during the transition of projects from design to construction.
• Prepares routine project correspondence, visual aids, charts, and graphics to support communication and presentations.
• Participates in training and professional development opportunities to enhance technical skills and knowledge in civil engineering practices.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.
  
  

• Associate’s Degree or certificate in engineering technology, CAD, drafting, or related field, plus a minimum of 6 years of working experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Strong knowledge of civil engineering design and drafting methods, principles and practices, and ability to perform related tasks.
• Knowledge of utility and water main design and construction practices.
• Knowledge of survey practices and related computations.
  
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
• Strong knowledge of and significant experience using AutoCAD. Proficiency in Microstation is preferred but not required.
• Strong computer skills including experience using ArcGIS, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors and others.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
• Must pass a controlled substance (drug) test for employment.
