Job Description

Position Summary:
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations, reporting, and accounting functions for Viking Industrial Painting and affiliate companies. This position provides financial leadership to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial information while supporting strategic decision-making and operational performance.

Working closely with Executive Leadership and Operations, this position provides financial insight into company and project performance, identifies risks and opportunities, and drives improvements in financial processes and controls.

The Controller will lead and develop the accounting team while establishing scalable processes and systems that support Viking’s continued growth across its multi-entity and multi-state operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead and oversee all accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll accounting, and month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation and analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
  • Develop and manage annual budgets, financial forecasts, cash flow projections, and financial models to support company-wide planning and decision-making.
  • Provide financial analysis and insight to Executive Leadership and General Managers regarding company performance, profitability, cash flow, financial risks, and opportunities.
  • Oversee project accounting and job costing processes, partnering with Operations to monitor project performance, costs, margins, and variances.
  • Establish and maintain effective information systems, internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures to safeguard company assets, improve financial accuracy, and mitigate risk.
  • Oversee tax compliance and coordinate with external tax professionals to ensure timely and accurate federal, state, and local filings.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable GAAP, accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and company policies.
  • Monitor financial performance across Viking’s entities and support consistent accounting practices and reporting throughout the organizations.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, establishing clear expectations and promoting accountability, accuracy, and professional growth.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve, standardize, and automate accounting and financial processes and systems.
  • Support strategic initiatives, acquisitions, new entity development, and other business opportunities through financial analysis and modeling.
  • Partner with Executive Leadership, Operations, and other cross-functional teams to improve financial performance and operational efficiency.
  • Serve as a financial resource to leadership, translating complex financial information into clear, actionable business insights.
  • Lead accounting information systems implementations to ensure the proper accounting principles are implemented and data is collected appropriately for proper detailed reporting.

Education, Skills and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; master’s degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of accounting and financial management experience, preferably within the construction industry.
  • Previous experience in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or comparable senior accounting leadership role preferred.
  • Strong construction accounting experience, including job costing, project accounting, contract billing, work-in-progress reporting, subscription billing, and project profitability analysis.
  • Experience supporting a multi-entity and/or multi-state organization strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Power BI, QuickBooks, or comparable ERP/accounting systems.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Experience developing and maintaining internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local tax requirements, particularly those applicable to construction and multi-state operations.
  • Experience leading, developing, and holding an accounting team accountable for performance and results.
  • Strong understanding of cash flow management, financial risk, and cost control.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex financial information and translate it into actionable recommendations.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and integrity in financial reporting.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and operate effectively in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify financial risks, strengthen controls, and implement practical solutions that improve business performance.
  • High level of integrity, accountability, and discretion when handling confidential financial information.
