At Merrimack Health, we are committed to pay transparency and equity. The base salary range is $375,000 to $450,000 annually, excluding fringe benefits and potential bonuses.
Your final base salary will be determined based on your education, experience, licensure, and internal equity considerations. Offers are typically made below the top of the range to support future salary growth.
Merrimack Health is seeking an experienced Emergency Medicine physician leader to guide clinical practice, quality, operations, and strategic development across the Emergency Departments at Lawrence, Methuen, and Haverhill Hospitals. Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the Chief will serve as the system’s senior physician leader for Emergency Medicine and partner with campus and system executives.
Position Overview
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Set a unified vision, strategy, and standards for Emergency Medicine across three hospital campuses.
- Lead, mentor, and support ED Medical Directors while promoting physician engagement, accountability, and professional development.
- Advance clinical quality, patient safety, regulatory performance, and patient experience.
- Partner across the health system to improve ED access, throughput, admissions, transfers, and overall hospital flow.
- Collaborate with inpatient, specialty, diagnostic, procedural, primary care, and ambulatory services to improve care coordination and access.
- Guide physician and APP recruitment, retention, workforce planning, staffing models, and resource utilization.
- Contribute to service-line strategy, operational and financial performance, and system-wide improvement initiatives.
Position Structure:

This is an enterprise-level physician leadership role. The anticipated allocation is approximately 80% administrative/system leadership and 20% direct clinical practice.
Required Qualifications:
- MD or DO; board certified in Emergency Medicine; Massachusetts medical license or eligibility; eligible for Merrimack Health medical staff privileges.
- Demonstrated physician leadership experience and strong understanding of ED operations, quality, patient safety, and throughput.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and multidisciplinary leadership skills.
- Prior ED Medical Director, Chief, system leadership, or multi-site service-line experience preferred, along with experience in workforce planning, quality improvement, and strategic development.
