Job Description

Reporting to the Endoscopy Unit Clinical Nurse Manager, the Endo Technician Clinical Hours Program provides structured, supervised, hands-on training. Participants develop and demonstrate competency in assisting physicians during endoscopic procedures and safely reprocessing reusable medical devices. Under direct supervision, the Endo Technician Intern maintains diagnostic and therapeutic gastroenterology equipment, supports its safe and effective operation, and provides technical assistance during procedures as directed by the physician.

During the 12-week clinical training program, participants are employed on a per diem basis and are expected to follow all departmental rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and established work practices. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting during endoscopic procedures, decontaminating, inspecting, assembling, sterilizing, storing, and distributing surgical instruments, medical devices, endoscopes, and sterile supplies in accordance with applicable infection prevention and patient safety standards.

Participants of the program will:

  • Understand infection prevention principles
  • Meet departmental productivity and quality expectations
  • Complete all necessary online modules
  • Demonstrate clinical competency in assisting physicians during endoscopic procedures
  • Demonstrate competency in the high-level disinfection and reprocessing of endoscopes according to the manufacturers’ instructions for use
  • Upon completion of clinical hours, has the potential to transition from a per diem status into a full-time Endo Tech II

Job Functions

  • Gathers appropriate instrumentation, supplies and equipment for procedure per gastroenterologist preferences.
  • Sets-up cases in procedure rooms per schedule.
  • Prepares specimens correctly and accurately under direct supervision.
  • Conducts breakdown of cases post-procedure and manually cleans scope per policy.
  • Prepares contaminated instrumentation for decontamination process by properly transferring and cleansing them, per Endoscopy policy, at the end of each procedure.
  • Conducts terminal end sterilization/high level disinfection of endoscopic equipment per policy.
  • Performs quality assurance testing of scope washers per policy.
  • Maintains scope washer’s quality assurance log per policy.
  • Assists in the turnover of the procedure room to include washing of beds, overhead lights and removal of linen and trash.
  • Provides cleaning and restocking Endoscopy Unit procedure rooms.
  • Performs basic procedural cart set-up at end of day.
  • Assists with transport of equipment and set-up of cases performed outside of the Endoscopy Unit.
  • Maintains inventory of stock, restock rooms, and supply closets.
  • Provides Charge Nurse with data such as malfunctioning of equipment, scope repair needs, and material management needs that affect the daily running of the Endoscopy schedule.
  • Attends appropriate in-service and continuing education programs commensurate with the job responsibilities.
  • Participates in regular on call rotation within the Endoscopy Unit, as certified in BLS provider.
  • Maintains and supports patients’ rights to care, privacy, and respect.
  • Other duties as assigned from time to time

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education
    • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
    • Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program is strongly preferred.
    • Sterile processing training course is strongly preferred. On the job training may be provided.
  • Experience
    • Previous sterile processing or instrument technician experience strongly preferred.
  • Licensure and/or Certification
    • BLS healthcare provider is required within 3 months of hire.
    • Certificate of completion from accredited surgical technology program preferred.
    • Sterile Processing Technician from International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) preferred. SGNA certification preferred.
  • Skills
