Reports to: Service Manager

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Schedule: 7a-3:30p M-F, weekends and overtime expected

Position Summary

The Heavy Haul Truck Driver is responsible for safely transporting heavy construction and crane equipment between company locations, customer jobsites, and other designated destinations. This position requires extensive experience hauling heavy equipment, specifically rough-terrain (RT) cranes, using detachable low-boy trailers. The ideal candidate is an experienced heavy-haul professional who understands proper loading, securement, permitting, route planning, and the unique challenges associated with transporting oversized and heavy equipment. Key Responsibilities

· Safely operate heavy-haul tractor-trailer combinations, including detachable low-boy trailers, to transport heavy equipment.

· Load, unload, and secure RT cranes and other heavy equipment in accordance with DOT regulations, manufacturer requirements, and company safety procedures.

· Inspect equipment, trailers, chains, binders, straps, ramps, and other securement equipment before and after each load.

· Properly position and secure heavy equipment to maintain safe weight distribution and prevent shifting or damage during transport.

· Safely maneuver oversized and heavy loads through construction sites, job sites, yards, public roadways, and other challenging environments.

· Plan and evaluate routes based on load dimensions, weight, bridge restrictions, road conditions, clearance requirements, and applicable permits.

· Obtain and comply with required oversize/overweight permits and route restrictions as directed.

· Conduct thorough pre-trip, post-trip, and in-route inspections and report any mechanical or safety concerns promptly.

· Coordinate with dispatch, branch personnel, crane operators, customers, and jobsite personnel regarding equipment movements and delivery schedules.

· Follow all applicable DOT, FMCSA, state, and local regulations governing commercial motor vehicle operation and heavy hauling.

· Maintain accurate logs, inspection reports, delivery documentation, permits, and other required records.

· Communicate professionally with customers and coworkers and provide a high level of service at every jobsite.

· Maintain a clean and organized truck, trailer, and work area.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Qualifications & Skills

· Required: Proven experience hauling heavy equipment, specifically RT cranes, on a detachable low-boy trailer.

· Strong knowledge of proper heavy-equipment loading, unloading, weight distribution, and securement practices.

· Knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations and applicable oversize/overweight requirements.

· Ability to safely maneuver large equipment and trailers in tight, congested, and uneven areas.

· Ability to perform thorough vehicle and trailer inspections and recognize potential safety or mechanical issues.

· Strong communication and organizational skills.

· Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field.

· Strong commitment to safety and compliance.

· Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and occasional overnight travel as business needs require.

Education & Experience

· Demonstrated experience operating tractor-trailer combinations used for heavy and oversized hauling.

· Experience with chains, binders, blocking, cribbing, ramps, and other heavy-haul securement methods.

· 2+years relevant experience

License & Certification

· Valid Class A CDL with a clean and acceptable driving

Working Conditions

This position requires frequent travel and work in outdoor environments, including construction sites, customer jobsites, equipment yards, and public roadways. The driver may be exposed to varying weather conditions, traffic, uneven terrain, noise, dust, and other jobsite hazards. The position requires climbing on and around trailers and heavy equipment, securing loads using chains, binders, straps, ramps, and other equipment, and regularly performing physical activities associated with loading and unloading heavy equipment. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required.

Physical Requirements

· Ability to climb onto and around trailers and heavy equipment.

· Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and position chains, binders, ramps, blocking, and other equipment.

· Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and work in various positions for extended periods.

· Ability to safely perform required loading and securement activities.

· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

· Ability to meet all physical and regulatory requirements necessary to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle.

Travel Requirements

· Regular daily travel, overnight travel occasionally required.
