Physical Therapist Senior – RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, the Physical Therapist Senior plays a critical role in providing high-quality rehabilitation care to patients in the acute care setting. Working with a high level of clinical expertise and independence, they evaluate and treat patients across a wide range of hospital services while supporting safe mobility, functional recovery, and optimal patient outcomes. In addition to direct patient care, the Physical Therapist Senior contributes to departmental leadership, daily operations, staff management, and performance improvement initiatives.

A typical day for a Physical Therapist Senior may include:

  • Evaluates patients in the acute care setting and develops individualized treatment plans based on clinical findings, functional status, and patient goals
  • Provides physical therapy interventions to patients across nursing units, including orthopedics, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, cardiac, critical care, trauma, general medicine, telemetry, the emergency department, and pediatrics
  • Assesses patients' mobility, strength, balance, coordination, endurance, and functional abilities to determine appropriate treatment and discharge recommendations
  • Provides therapeutic interventions designed to improve mobility, strength, functional independence, and overall quality of life
  • Educates patients and families regarding treatment plans, mobility strategies, safety precautions, and recommendations for continued care
  • Collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, therapists, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team to coordinate patient care and support optimal outcomes
  • Completes timely, accurate, and comprehensive clinical documentation in accordance with departmental and hospital standards
  • Supports the daily operations of the Physical Therapy department, including staff scheduling and coordination of departmental activities
  • Participates in department and hospital meetings and contributes to initiatives that promote quality, safety, and operational excellence
  • Provides leadership and support to Physical Therapy staff, helping to promote clinical excellence, teamwork, and adherence to departmental standards
  • Participates in performance improvement initiatives and identifies opportunities to enhance patient care, department processes, and overall service delivery
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, staff, and interdisciplinary partners while serving as a clinical and departmental resource

To be considered for this Physical Therapist Senior opportunity:

  • Graduate of an accredited program in Physical Therapy at the baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate level required
  • Must hold an active New Jersey Physical Therapist license
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association required
  • Minimum of three years of acute care Physical Therapy experience required
  • Leadership and supervisory experience preferred
  • Active membership in a professional organization is encouraged but not required
  • Must be available to work a full-time, day schedule of 40 hours per week, including rotating weekends and holidays
