Mechanical Engineer (Local Candidates only) in Clearwater, Florida at DOUGLAS MACHINES CORP

Position Summary:
The Mechanical Engineer (Mid to Senior Level) supports the design, development, testing, and production of mechanical and electro-mechanical industrial equipment used in the washing and sanitizing industry. The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for ensuring our products are effectively aligned with the customers’ requirements as communicated by Sales and Applications Engineering. This position will work closely with electrical engineering, procurement, manufacturing, and testing to make a quality product you can be proud of. As opportunities arise, the mechanical engineer will work with the product development team to create new and improved products to solve customer pain points and address new markets. With 45 years of equipment out in the field, the Mechanical Engineer supports the Service Department by providing technical support and releasing replacement parts and assemblies. This position reports out of the Douglas Machines Corp. facility in Clearwater, FL.
Essential Functions:
• Primary focus is on releasing machines to production by designing mechanical parts and assemblies in 3D, creating and maintaining 2D drawings, bill of materials, and engineering documentation. This includes customizing current equipment offerings and supporting service with technical support and replacement parts
• Secondary focus is on New Product Development and the continuous improvement of our products and processes by working with internal teams to implement product modifications that enhance performance, improve reliability, reduce cost, and improve ease of manufacturing.
• Work closely with applications, sales, service, procurement, and manufacturing on issues relating to current and future product requirements and implement product design efforts which meet the evolving needs of the customers
• Apply basic DFM/DFA, GD&T, materials, tolerancing, and manufacturing principles
• Support manufacturing build, testing, and prototyping as needed
• Support engineering changes and technical documentation
• Responsible for providing applications engineering, sales, and service with the necessary technical expertise to aid in the sale and support of Douglas equipment
• Perform additional duties as assigned by manager
 
Knowledge / Skills / Expertise:
• For this role, a minimum of 3 - 6 years of experience in a mechanical, applications, or manufacturing engineering type role with a company involved in manufacturing equipment or manufacturing process is desired.
• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering is required
• Passionate, detail oriented, independent thinking, self-starting, motivated to get things done
• Demonstrated experience working on projects that balance customer requirements with technical feasibility and manufacturability
• Ability to work within a cross-functional team is essential
• Ability to work with fellow engineers sharing knowledge and mentoring is highly desirable
• Aptitude to leverage the technical resources of our vendors and suppliers
• Must be able to handle multiple tasks/projects and manage priorities accordingly
• Experience with 3D Modeling Software (Solid Edge, SolidWorks, Inventor, or Pro/E) and 2D (AutoCAD) drawings required
• Experience with GD&T, DFM, DFA highly desirable
• Experience with sheet metal design preferred
• Experience designing parts to be welded a plus
• Ability to adapt to new technology and systems
• Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services. Experience with Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics a plus
• Proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
• Experience with PDM, Vault, ERP, or CRM (Salesforce) a plus
• Experience in washing, sanitizing, or food and beverage equipment a plus
Physical Demands:
• Works in normal office environment, regularly works from a sitting position at a computer. Stand-up desks are available on request. Repetitive typing and computer use are required. Makes occasional off-site visits requiring air travel or driving personal vehicle.
• While performing the duties of the job, the employee must be able to use a keyboard, mouse, calculator, and telephone.
• Required to stand or walk, sit, talk, hear, and use hands to finger, grasp, handle, or feel.
• Works at manufacturing site to support manufacturing team in the building, troubleshooting, and testing of equipment where the use of safety equipment such as safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, gloves, helmets, and hearing protection is utilized daily in the plant.
• Ability to climb up and down ladders or stairs at site is required.
• This position requires occasional use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials, as required to conduct testing.
• Must be able to lift and maneuver 50 lbs. without physical restrictions.
Environmental Conditions:
• On-site position. Ability to commute to work consistently is a must
• Manufacturing Environment
o Humidity level may be elevated in the shop during summer months.
o Exposure to loud noise levels, at times.
o Exposure to certain contaminants, at times.
• Position requires 5% annual travel for trade shows, training workshops, and customer site visits as needed for service support; must maintain a valid driver’s license in good standing. May travel to San-Matic HQ facility in Sun Prairie, WI.
