Government Cost Accountant Position Overview
Responsible for cost accounting activities on government contracts, including Estimate-at-Completion (EAC) analysis, cost pool management, and compliance with DCAA, CAS, and FAR/DFARS requirements. Partners with program management, contracts, and operations to ensure accurate contract cost recognition and reporting.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Prepare and analyze monthly EACs across assigned contracts/programs, incorporating actuals, ETC, and risk/opportunity assessments
- Support program EAC reviews with Program Managers, Finance, and Ops leadership
- Maintain compliance with Cost Accounting Standards (CAS), FAR Part 31, and DFARS cost principles
- Support DCAA audits, incurred cost submissions, and disclosure statement maintenance
- Perform indirect rate development, cost pool allocations, and variance analysis
- Ensure proper cost accumulation by contract line item (CLIN) and work breakdown structure (WBS)
- Reconcile job cost data between ERP/MRP systems and general ledger
- Support proposal cost volume development and forward pricing rate proposals
- Monitor contract funding, ceiling limitations, and cost overrun risk
- Assist with revenue recognition under ASC 606 (percentage-of-completion) tied to EAC data
- Support internal controls, SOX compliance, and audit readiness
Skills and Qualifications:
Required
- Must be a US Citizen or a Permanent resident per ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) guidelines.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 3–7+ years of government contract cost accounting experience in aerospace/defense manufacturing
- Working knowledge of DCAA, CAS, FAR/DFARS, and EAC methodology
- Experience with ERP systems (Deltek Costpoint, SAP, or similar)
- Strong Excel skills; financial modeling proficiency
Preferred
- Experience with NADCAP/AS9100 manufacturing environments
- Exposure to ITAR-controlled programs
- CMA, CPA, or progress toward certification
- Experience with EVMS (Earned Value Management)
- An active clearance is highly preferred. Candidates without an active clearance may still be considered but must be eligible to obtain and maintain one.
