JOB TITLE: Master Fleet Mechanic
DIVISION: BB - Technical Operations
DEPARTMENT: Technical Operations

JOB SUMMARY

  • The Master Fleet Mechanic is responsible for all major repairs and routine maintenance on the fleet of vehicles owned and leased by Buckeye Broadband, including complete engine and transmission rebuilds. The current fleet is approximately 160 vehicles.
  • The Master Fleet Mechanic serves as the subject matter expert within the department and is responsible for assisting and mentoring the Fleet Mechanics.
  • The Master Fleet Mechanic interfaces with outside vendors, Fleet Mechanics, department directors, managers, supervisors, and vehicle operators from Technical Operations, Construction, and BCSN.
  • This position reports to the Technical Operations Training, Safety, Fleet, and Quality Control Supervisor and has no direct reports.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The Master Fleet Mechanic:

  • Performs and schedules preventative and routine maintenance on company owned and leased vehicles including bucket trucks and buckets, trailers, portable generators, and related equipment necessary for their effective, efficient, and safe operations;
  • Troubleshoots vehicle systems and that of related equipment to identify repairs necessary to put the vehicle in safe operating condition;
  • Performs both minor and major vehicle repairs in-house when possible and with time permitting, including but not limited to 12-volt electrical systems and wiring, brake systems, suspension and hydraulics systems, engine rebuilds, repairs and swaps, transmission rebuilds, repairs, and swaps, and any other maintenances as necessary;
  • Schedules particularly time consuming, major repairs with approved vendors;
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on the automotive HVAC systems in the company's fleet vehicles;
  • Advises department managers as to what repairs are necessary with an estimated cost and time of completion;
  • Maintains vehicle records in accordance with the accepted practice in use and industry standards;
  • Collects D.V.I.R. inspection forms daily, checking them for problems listed by vehicle operators and repairing or scheduling repairs as needed and consistent with departmental practice;
  • Performs periodic vehicle inspections to fulfill DOT and departmental requirements;
  • Prepares new vehicles for service by installing radios, bins, ladder racks and safety equipment as needed for vehicle operators to perform their daily tasks;
  • Removes and recycles equipment (when possible) in preparation for the disposal of old vehicles and equipment;
  • Maintains work area and tools in a clean, neat manner to provide a safe and efficient work environment;
  • Stores and issues tools and vehicle operational and maintenance materials such as windshield wiper blades, motor oil and other materials and equipment needed by operators of vehicles and to perform routine functions;
  • Coordinates or assists in transportation of vehicles to and from repair facilities when necessary;
  • Orders, with approval, from approved vendors supplies, parts and equipment for use in repair and maintenance of fleet vehicles;
  • Adheres to and enforces the Company's policies and procedures, including the EEO guidelines and safety, at all times;
  • Performs any miscellaneous department duties as needed and/or assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent – required
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Mechanic certified – required
  • EPA Section 609 Technician Certification – required
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant vehicle mechanics experience – required
  • Department of Transportation medical certification – required
  • Advanced knowledge of hydraulics, transmissions, engines, brakes, fuel and air systems, lubrication, generators, safety procedures, fuel and ignitions systems, automotive HVAC systems, tires (mounting and balancing), and electronic technology required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Walking, kneeling, standing, stooping, sitting, driving, hearing, talking, vision (close, distant, color, depth perception, adjust focus), and use of hands and fingers. Light lifting of 75 lbs. is occasionally needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The Master Fleet Mechanic is a full-time, non-exempt position working 40 hours per week.
  • This position works 40 hours per week with varying hours to accommodate the needs of the department.
  • Overtime is required and must be approved in advance by the supervisor.
  • The Master Fleet Mechanic reports to the warehouse building at 4818 Angola Road.
  • The Master Fleet Mechanic works in an automated business office environment with business office equipment including telephones, personal computers, copy machines, typewriters, and FAX equipment;
  • The Master Fleet Mechanic is required to drive on the job as needed and is subject to regular MVR checks. He/she must maintain a valid driver's license and maintain a driving record that satisfies Company's insurable driver standards at all times. Any time these conditions are not met, he/she must not drive on the job and must immediately report it to their supervisor.
