Job Description

  • Provides responsive customer support in all phases of building maintenance and operations.
  • Under the direction of licensed mechanic or supervisor, inspects and tests heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment as well as other primary building systems to ensure proper functioning.
  • Reports noted deficiencies to supervisor or foreman to initiate corrective actions as needed.
  • Assists licensed tradespersons in the installation, repair and operation of all types of building equipment.
  • Collects detailed equipment data needed to establish and update preventive maintenance records and work performance logs.
  • Identifies and labels equipment in accordance with preventive maintenance plans.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance routines on primary building equipment, including: lubricating components, changing filters, repacking small valves, replacing lamps, adjusting and replacing belts, cleaning or replacing sedimentation traps and strainers.
  • Cleans work area(s) shops and mechanical rooms and maintains tools and equipment.
  • Performs other core skills of the trade and related duties as required. Assists and advises customers by providing follow-up on progress and status of work performed.
  • Must supply a complete set of hand tools.
  • Must be willing to work in research laboratory environments and around hazardous materials.
  • May be required to pass a Respiratory Physical and certification for use of a respirator.
  • Required to wear/use appropriate safety clothing/equipment at all times.
  • Required to properly wear a department-issued uniform and maintain a professional image at all times.
  • May be assigned to work independently or as part of a multi-trade team under the guidance and direction of the Area Supervisor and/or Working Foreperson.
  • May be assigned to perform property maintenance work or escort / assist inspectors from the City Water Departments (Cambridge/Boston) throughout the campus.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to lift up a minimum of 50 lbs. and transport piping and equipment in excess of 200 lbs. with others. May use chain falls and come alongs for heavier lifting. Must be able to push and pull heavy loads as listed. Must be able to stoop and bend for long periods of time and work on hands and knees and other awkward positions for extended periods, to routinely walk to and from various buildings carrying tools, equipment and other essentials to the job site. Must be able to work alone and climb multiple sets of stairs, work off ladders, staging, lifts, etc.


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum two years field experience with HVAC equipment and/or trade or vocational school training.
  • Basic knowledge of heating, ventilation and air conditioning machinery and components required.
  • Must possess a valid State drivers license and satisfactory driving history.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Must be willing to work overtime during peak heating and cooling seasons and respond to emergencies.
  • A current address and telephone number must be provided as an ongoing condition of employment.
  • Must observe and comply with all standard safety codes and practices, and perform work in accordance with recognized trade and University standards.
  • Must be able to read and interpret basic plans, specifications, operating manuals and other written materials associated with this trade.
  • Must demonstrate good penmanship and organizational skills and be able to effectively communicate in English with peers and customers.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Must possess a valid State drivers license

Compensation Range/Rate (including Shift Differential if applicable): $35.47 plus $2.35 Shift differential

Work Format Details

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that all duties and responsibilities must be performed at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location. Certain visa types may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.

This position is salary grade level 000. Corresponding salary information can be found in the job description above.
