Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the development of low-voltage power distribution equipment, specifically switchgear assemblies built to UL 891 standards. This role focuses on creating detailed mechanical designs that are compliant, manufacturable, and aligned with project requirements.

This is a hands-on engineering position requiring prior experience with switchgear design, strong CAD capabilities, and close coordination with electrical engineering and manufacturing teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop mechanical designs and layouts for low-voltage switchgear assemblies in accordance with UL 891 standards
  • Design enclosure structures, internal compartments, breaker mounting systems, and cable management layouts
  • Produce detailed fabrication drawings, including general arrangements, sheet metal components, weldments, and bills of materials (BOMs)
  • Ensure designs meet applicable codes, internal standards, and manufacturing requirements
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers to align mechanical configurations with one-line diagrams, bus layouts, and cable routing needs
  • Support design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) initiatives
  • Participate in design reviews, resolving issues related to clearances, interferences, and serviceability
  • Provide engineering support during production, testing, and inspection phases
  • Contribute to cost optimization and value engineering efforts
  • Maintain strong ownership of deliverables in a fast-paced, production-driven environment
  • Travel occasionally to support project coordination or supplier interaction
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 3–8+ years of experience in mechanical design of low-voltage switchgear
  • Direct, hands-on experience designing UL 891 switchgear (required)
  • Ability to independently execute switchgear designs from concept through production
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Enclosure and structural design
    • Breaker mounting and compartment layouts
    • Bus compartment separation and clearance requirements
    • Cable entry, routing, and accessibility
    • Ventilation, cooling, and arc containment considerations
  • Experience supporting compliance documentation and UL inspection processes
  • Proficiency with CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Inventor
  • Solid understanding of sheet metal fabrication, weldments, and manufacturing processes
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
  • Effective collaboration and communication skills
What Success Looks Like
  • Accurate, compliant switchgear designs delivered on schedule
  • Seamless transition from design to manufacturing with minimal rework
  • Effective coordination with electrical engineering and production teams
  • Proactive ownership of projects while maintaining quality and compliance standards

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This role offers the opportunity to work on complex power distribution systems in a highly technical environment. Ideal for engineers who enjoy hands-on design work, collaboration across disciplines, and delivering high-quality solutions in a production-focused setting.
