What You’ll Do

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will report to the Practice Manager, Clinical Supervisor, or Office Coordinator (BMG). Collect and process blood, urine and other bodily fluid samples. Ensure that lab requisitions are appropriately completed and authorized and obtain pertinent patient information for laboratory records and/or billing purposes. Perform general office/clerical responsibilities.

Laboratory Assistant Job Responsibilities:

  • Collect and process specimens (blood, urine, and other bodily fluids), give injections.
  • Maintain patient logs, record test results, and distribute reports to physicians
  • Manage lab orders, files, and retained records for up to two years
  • Perform EKGs, spirometry, audiometry, and breath alcohol testing; maintained logs
  • Conduct lab analyses within scope of training and authorization
  • Document lab charges and verified diagnoses for accurate billing
  • Maintain quality control, calibration, and equipment maintenance records
  • Perform proficiency testing and document corrective actions as needed
  • Ensure lab cleanliness and compliance with OSHA and biohazard safety guidelines
  • Greet patients, answered calls, and supported front office operations
  • Collect patient information for records and billing
  • Complete additional duties to support department efficiency and effectiveness

What You Bring

As Laboratory Assistant, this role requires knowledge of medical terminology, basic laboratory procedures, and the ability to perform phlebotomy and routine lab testing. It also requires proficiency in typing and computer use, along with a basic understanding of billing processes and general business office procedures. Strong communication and telephone skills are essential to effectively greet patients and handle calls in a pleasant, clear, and helpful manner. Additionally, the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with patients, medical staff, team members, and the public is necessary.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program or experience required
  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of high school diploma (with courses in mathematics and some biological sciences preferred).
  • Minimum of one year of patient care, customer service, general office/clerical or related experience is preferred.
  • Qualifies as testing personnel for moderate complexity testing as defined in CFR.493.1423.
