AVP, Contract Surety Underwriter

This senior underwriting role is focused on building, managing, and expanding a profitable surety portfolio across the U.S. market, with a strong emphasis on broker engagement and strategic business development. The position plays a key role in shaping regional growth by combining technical underwriting expertise with commercial relationship management. You will be responsible for evaluating risk, structuring surety solutions, and ensuring disciplined portfolio performance in alignment with global underwriting standards. The role requires close collaboration with internal teams across the Americas and international markets to optimize capabilities and drive consistent underwriting excellence. It is a highly autonomous and entrepreneurial position that also involves leadership in developing regional relationships and contributing to team growth. Success in this role directly impacts portfolio profitability, market presence, and long-term broker partnerships.

Accountabilities
  • Develop and execute strategic business plans to expand surety operations across the U.S., with a focus on regional growth and market penetration
  • Underwrite and manage a profitable surety portfolio through active engagement with brokers and distribution partners
  • Build, maintain, and expand strong broker relationships to drive new business opportunities and portfolio growth
  • Evaluate, structure, and document underwriting decisions in a transparent and consistent manner aligned with internal guidelines
  • Conduct detailed account and portfolio underwriting while ensuring compliance with risk appetite and governance standards
  • Collaborate with regional and global underwriting teams to align risk strategies and leverage international capabilities
  • Participate in industry associations, broker events, and surety market activities to strengthen market presence and visibility
  • Contribute to the development and leadership of a regional underwriting team, supporting capability building and talent development
  • Manage marketing plans, business strategies, and budgets to support sustainable growth and profitability
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, or a related field
  • 7+ years of experience in surety underwriting or related insurance industry roles
  • Proven track record of developing and growing business through broker relationships
  • Strong expertise in underwriting surety risks and managing complex portfolios
  • Experience developing and executing business plans, marketing strategies, and budget management
  • Deep understanding of surety distribution channels and regional broker networks
  • Strong entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to identify and capture market opportunities
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, service-driven environment
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills with attention to risk assessment and portfolio performance
