Cashier in Port Townsend, Washington at FOOD CO-OP

The Cashier supports daily front end operations by delivering friendly, efficient, and accurate checkout service. This role promotes co-op membership and ensures compliance with store policies and regulations. The Cashier works collaboratively with team members to create a safe, welcoming environment and ensure customers have a positive experience.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide friendly, professional customer service to all customers
• Foster a respectful, collaborative team environment to support efficient store operations
• Follow all food safety, sanitation, and health regulations
• Accurately and efficiently process customer transactions
• Comply with all government regulations regarding alcohol sales and taxation
• Accurately use PLU codes and follow proper tare procedures for scalable items
• Process all forms of payment, including cash, check, debit/credit cards, and SNAP according to store procedures
• Adhere to all cash handling policies and procedures
• Promote and accurately process co-op memberships, clearly communicating member benefits
• Assist customers with bagging groceries as needed
• Request assistance when necessary to ensure smooth operations
• Keep work areas clean, organized, and fully stocked
• Assist customers with questions and direct them to appropriate store sections
• Retrieve baskets and carts, and assist other departments during downtime
• Promptly clean spills and remove hazards to maintain a safe environment
• Report equipment problems or safety concerns to a Person-in-Charge (PIC) or manager
• Review the department communication log before each shift
• Attend and participate in all team and storewide meetings and training sessions
• Help train new team members
• Follow opening and closing procedures as assigned
• Perform other duties as assigned

• Perform other duties as assigned Qualifications:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent

• Valid WA Food Worker Card or ability to obtain within two weeks of hire

Experience: Previous cashiering and customer service experience preferred

• Natural food or grocery store experience preferred

Abilities, Knowledge, & Skills:

• Ability to work flexible shifts including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to use personal protective equipment (PPE) when required
• Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for cleaning products
• Ability to follow safety procedures and department, store, and co-op policies
• Knowledge of food safety and health regulations
• Basic math skills for cash handling
• Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, email, and Internet)
• Strong attention to detail
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong customer service skills

Physical Requirements

• Lift and move up to 40 pounds during shift
• Stand, walk, bend, twist, crouch, and reach up to 8 hours
• Frequent use of hands for scanning, bagging, and handling cash and other items
• Work in a busy, noisy environment
• Remain alert, active, and safety-focused throughout the shift
