The Assistant Professor of Marine Transportation provides specialized academic, professional, and experiential instruction in marine transportation, navigation, shipboard operations, maritime safety, vessel management, and related areas of professional maritime education.

The position supports the education and professional development of students preparing for careers as U.S. Coast Guard-licensed deck officers and other maritime professionals. Instruction integrates academic theory with contemporary commercial maritime practice, professional credentialing requirements, navigation and bridge technology, maritime simulation, operational decision-making, and shipboard training.

The faculty member is expected to teach across multiple areas of the Marine Transportation curriculum; participate in practical, simulator-based, and shipboard instruction; contribute to curriculum development and assessment; advise students; participate in departmental and College service; maintain professional engagement with the maritime industry; and participate in Summer Sea Term training as required by the Department.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will be assigned Marine Transportation, Navigation, Nautical Operations, Maritime Technology, and related courses according to the instructional needs of the Department and the faculty member's professional qualifications and experience.

• U.S. Coast Guard License Examination Preparation
• Maritime Simulation and Simulator Operations

The faculty member will:

• Prepare and deliver classroom, laboratory, simulator, shipboard, and experiential instruction in Marine Transportation and related professional maritime subjects.
• Develop, administer, and evaluate examinations, practical assessments, simulator exercises, projects, and other appropriate measures of student competency.
• Develop and maintain instructional materials, syllabi, laboratory exercises, simulator scenarios, assessments, and course content consistent with College requirements and applicable professional maritime standards.
• Provide theoretical and practical instruction in navigation, vessel operations, bridge management, maritime safety, cargo operations, and other deck-officer competencies.
• Design and deliver realistic simulator-based scenarios involving navigation, collision avoidance, bridge resource management, vessel operations, emergency response, and professional decision-making.
• Integrate contemporary maritime technologies and professional practices into instruction, including electronic navigation systems, bridge equipment, automation, decision-support systems, and emerging maritime technologies.
• Provide instruction and assessment related to professional maritime credentialing and preparation for U.S. Coast Guard deck-officer examinations and qualifications.
• Participate in shipboard and experiential education, which may include instruction aboard the Training Ship, operation and command of small vessels, pier-side instruction, swimming-pool exercises, firefighting-field activities, and other hands-on professional training environments.
• Advise and mentor students pursuing professional maritime careers and provide academic and professional guidance related to licensure, shipboard employment, and maritime career development.
• Participate in curriculum review, development, assessment, accreditation, and continuous improvement of Marine Transportation and maritime license programs.
• Participate in departmental and College governance, committees, recruitment, outreach, faculty development, and other institutional-service activities.
• Maintain professional engagement with the maritime industry, regulatory agencies, professional organizations, maritime educational institutions, and other appropriate stakeholders.
• Conduct and disseminate scholarly, professional, or applied work in areas related to marine transportation, navigation, maritime education and training, maritime safety, ship operations, simulation, or related areas.
• Remain current with changes in professional maritime practice, regulatory requirements, vessel operations, navigation technology, maritime simulation, and maritime education and training.
• Perform other academic, instructional, professional, and institutional duties normally associated with a full-time faculty appointment in Marine Transportation.

Summer Sea Term Requirement

• Participation in two out of three Summer Sea Terms on an annual basis is expected, based upon departmental and institutional requirements. Summer Sea Term service involves professional shipboard training and supervision of cadets in navigation, bridge operations, seamanship, maritime safety, vessel operations, and related deck-training activities.

Job Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Marine Transportation, Nautical Science, Maritime Studies, Transportation, or a closely related field.
• Substantial progressively responsible professional maritime experience involving shipboard navigation, vessel operations, marine transportation, maritime safety, cargo operations, or related professional maritime activities.
• Professional deck-officer credential or internationally recognized equivalent demonstrating advanced operational maritime expertise.
• Demonstrated professional or academic expertise in one or more of the following:

1. Navigation and bridge operations;
2. Shipboard operations and vessel management;
3. Cargo operations;
4. Bridge Resource Management;
5. Maritime simulation;
6. Maritime safety and regulatory compliance; or
7. Electronic navigation and bridge systems.

• Demonstrated ability to teach both theoretical and practical components of professional maritime education.

Additional Information:

Classification: The anticipated salary range is $70,245 annually and includes an outstanding benefits package (for more information, please see the UUP Full-Time Benefits-at-a-Glance).
