ABOUT ROCHESTER SENSORS
Rochester Sensors, an Amphenol Company, develops sensors in many different industries including industrial, heavy vehicle, power generation and storage. Rochester is increasing its range of sensor know-how and in-house technologies to create engineered solutions for its customers. We are a multi-national company headquartered in Dallas, Texas, with manufacturing facilities in Coppell, Texas USA; Mexico City, Mexico; Brussels, Belgium; Warwick, United Kingdom, Shannon, Ireland and Shanghai, China.
Rochester builds Quality, Accuracy, and Reliability into all of our products. New designs and technologies are being introduced to further enhance your satisfaction with our products.
All of our products are constructed of quality materials to ensure durability and longevity. Rochester products are sold to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) & distributors in the following markets:
Agricultural • Aircraft • Automotive • Refrigeration • Industrial • LP Gas Marine • Heavy Truck • Off-Road • Construction • Locomotive Petrochemicals • Process Equipment
THIS IS NOT A REMOTE POSITION. MUST BE LOCATED IN THE DFW AREA
SENIOR ELECTRICAL DESIGN ENGINEER
OVERVIEW
We are seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to own the development of electronic hardware for Rochester's liquid level and sensing products, deployed across heavy vehicle, off-road, construction, agricultural, industrial, and adjacent markets. This is a hands-on design role for an engineer who has taken electronic products from concept through production release and can own the outcome end to end — circuit design, PCB, verification and validation, root cause analysis, and the cross-functional work required to launch and sustain a product. Our products operate in demanding environments, including wide temperature ranges, severe vibration and mechanical shock, electrical noise, and chemical contamination. You will work closely with firmware, mechanical, quality, manufacturing, and suppliers, and you will be the technical owner of the designs you deliver. Experience developing sensing or instrumentation products is expected. Deep expertise in Rochester's specific sensing technologies — guided wave radar, capacitive, and ultrasonic — is something we will develop in the right engineer.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own the electrical design of sensing products from concept through production release, including requirements, architecture, detailed design, prototyping, validation, and launch support.
- Design high-performance analog and mixed-signal circuitry, including sensor interface electronics, signal conditioning, power management, and embedded microcontroller systems.
- Own PCB design through schematic capture, layout direction, stackup and grounding decisions, design for manufacturability, and hands-on board bring-up and debug.
- Develop electronics that perform reliably in extreme temperatures (–40°C to +125°C+), high vibration and mechanical shock, electrical noise and EMI, and chemical and environmental contamination.
- Work closely with firmware engineers on board bring-up, communication interfaces, and system-level integration, and lead the isolation of problems that cross the hardware and firmware boundary.
- Plan and execute design verification and product validation, including environmental, thermal, vibration, EMC, ingress, and accelerated-life testing.
- Lead structured root cause analysis on design, validation, production, and field issues, and drive corrective action through to closure.
- Support manufacturing readiness and design for manufacturability, and respond to production and supplier issues as the responsible design engineer.
- Serve as the technical owner of assigned products: make and defend design decisions, manage technical risk, and be accountable for how the product performs in the field.
- Influence quality, manufacturing, firmware, suppliers, and customers without direct authority in order to reach the right technical outcome.
- Support customer and OEM technical interaction, including application questions, integration support, and field investigations.
- Contribute to Rochester's engineering rigor, including design standards, component libraries, design review practice, and validation planning.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Master's degree a plus).
- 8+ years of experience developing electronic products, including at least one product personally taken from concept through production release.
- Strong analog and mixed-signal circuit design experience, including low-level signal conditioning, sensor interface electronics, noise reduction, grounding, and signal integrity.
- Hands-on experience with at least one sensing or instrumentation technology, such as capacitive, ultrasonic, radar, magnetic, optical, pressure, temperature, or strain measurement.
- PCB design ownership, including schematic capture, layout direction, stackup and grounding decisions, design for manufacturability, and hands-on board bring-up and debug.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and execute both design verification and product validation, and to clearly articulate the difference between them.
- Structured root cause analysis and troubleshooting on real product failures, including field and customer issues.
- Experience working alongside firmware teams and with common embedded interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, LIN, and RS-485.
- Experience designing electronics for harsh environments, including wide temperature ranges, high vibration and mechanical shock, and electrical noise.
- Proficient hand soldering, prototyping, and bench instrumentation. This is a hands-on engineering role.
- A deep technical engineer rather than a project manager, with a clear record of owning technical decisions and driving them to closure.
- Clear communicator who can explain technical decisions and work effectively across engineering, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and customers.
- Driven to develop highly reliable products that work in the real world.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Development of liquid level sensing systems.
- Guided wave radar, capacitive, or ultrasonic sensing systems.
- Heavy vehicle, construction equipment, agricultural machinery, mining, or other off-road equipment.
- Automotive-grade product development processes, including IATF 16949, APQP, DFMEA / PFMEA, and DV / PV validation.
- EMI/EMC design, testing, and compliance.
- Embedded firmware development (C/C++).
- Automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN).
- Signal processing for noisy industrial environments.
- Sensor physics and measurement technique development.
- Functional safety exposure (ISO 26262).
