Chief Development Officer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Chief Development Officer based in the United States.

This is a high-impact executive leadership role responsible for shaping and executing the organization’s long-term revenue and fundraising strategy. The Chief Development Officer will serve as the senior-most development leader, driving significant growth through major, transformational, and multi-channel philanthropic partnerships. This role blends visionary strategy with hands-on execution, requiring direct engagement with top-tier donors, foundations, corporations, and government partners. You will build and scale a high-performing development function, set ambitious multi-year revenue goals, and partner closely with executive leadership and the Board. Operating in a mission-driven, national nonprofit environment, this leader will play a pivotal role in expanding programs that support workforce development and technical education across the country. The ideal candidate brings both entrepreneurial drive and emotional intelligence to navigate complex stakeholder relationships and high-value funding conversations.

Accountabilities:

The Chief Development Officer will define and execute the overall revenue strategy, with a primary focus on major and transformational gifts. This includes leading high-level fundraising initiatives while building the infrastructure and team required to support scalable growth.

  • Set and own the organization’s fundraising vision, strategy, and multi-year revenue roadmap in partnership with executive leadership and the Board
  • Personally identify, cultivate, solicit, and close major gifts from high-net-worth individuals, foundations, corporations, and government entities
  • Build and expand a strong national pipeline of corporate partnerships and institutional funders
  • Lead, develop, and scale the development team, including coaching staff and establishing performance expectations
  • Design and optimize fundraising systems, processes, tools, and reporting frameworks to ensure operational excellence
  • Drive cross-organizational alignment to foster a culture of philanthropy and shared revenue accountability
  • Represent the organization externally as a senior ambassador to donors, partners, and industry stakeholders
  • Identify and develop new revenue streams, including innovative partnerships and long-term funding models
Requirements

This role requires a seasoned fundraising executive with a proven track record of securing high-value gifts and leading development strategy at scale. The ideal candidate combines strategic vision with strong execution, relationship-building expertise, and leadership capability.

  • 10+ years of progressive nonprofit fundraising or development leadership experience, including major gift and institutional fundraising
  • Demonstrated success securing seven-figure partnerships and cultivating five- to six-figure donor relationships
  • Experience building and leading high-performing development or revenue-generating teams
  • Strong background in designing fundraising strategies, infrastructure, and scalable revenue systems
  • Proven ability to engage and influence senior stakeholders, including executives, board members, and high-net-worth donors
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and public speaking skills
  • Strong financial and business acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, and revenue planning
  • Proficiency with CRM systems and fundraising tools
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or CFRE certification preferred
  • Ability to travel nationally as needed and operate in a highly relationship-driven, mission-focused environment
Benefits
  • Competitive executive-level compensation package
  • Opportunity to lead and scale a national fundraising function with significant organizational impact
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance options
  • Retirement savings plan and long-term incentive opportunities (where applicable)
  • Flexible work environment with remote-based structure
  • Generous paid time off and holiday schedule
  • Professional development and leadership growth opportunities
  • Mission-driven work environment focused on education, workforce development, and national impact.
