Position Overview
The Ellis School, the only pre-kindergarten to grade 12 independent all-girls day school in Pittsburgh, PA, is seeking a part-time Middle and Upper School Physical Education teacher beginning in August 2026. Responsibilities include teaching physical education courses, supporting the overall health and wellness of students, and serving as an advisor to a small group of students. Additional responsibilities may include coaching and other duties that are integral to the role of faculty members, including—but not limited to—proctoring study halls, chaperoning, and committee work.
Under the supervision of the Chair of the Physical Education Department, this position directly advances The Ellis School's mission by fostering students' physical well-being, confidence, teamwork, and lifelong appreciation for health and fitness, empowering each girl to thrive both in and beyond the classroom.
Key Responsibilities
Teach physical education classes using developmentally appropriate and engaging instructional practices
Promote lifelong habits of physical activity, wellness, teamwork, and sportsmanship
Foster an inclusive environment that supports students' emotional, physical, and social well-being
Apply diverse and flexible pedagogical approaches to support adolescent learners
Assess student growth and provide timely feedback to students and families
Serve as an advisor to a small group of students, providing guidance and support throughout the school year
Potentially coach one or more athletic teams, depending on experience and school needs
Collaborate with colleagues within the Physical Education Department and across divisions
Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues
Contribute to a positive, inclusive school community rooted in Ellis’s mission and values, demonstrating integrity, flexibility, and a collaborative, student-centered approach
Participate fully in the life of the school through responsibilities such as proctoring study halls, chaperoning events, and serving on committees
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Education, or a related field
Experience working with adolescents in educational, athletic, or coaching settings
Strong understanding of the role athletics and physical education play in students’ emotional, physical, and academic well-being
Demonstrated ability to apply diverse and flexible pedagogical approaches
Proven ability to work collaboratively within a department and school community
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Commitment to the education and advancement of girls and to fostering an inclusive school community
Preferred
Teaching certification and/or advanced degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Education, or a related field
Previous experience teaching physical education in a school setting
Coaching experience at the Middle School and/or Upper School level
Familiarity with current best practices in health, wellness, and physical education instruction
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
