Summary

The Welder is responsible for joining and repairing metal components according to drawings, specifications, and quality standards. This position uses welding equipment and hand tools to produce safe, accurate, and high-quality work in a steel fabrication environment.

Job Description

  • Read and follow work instructions, drawings, and welding symbols.
  • Set up and operate welding equipment safely.
  • Weld steel components using approved welding processes.
  • Inspect completed welds for quality and accuracy.
  • Use grinders, torches, and other fabrication tools as needed.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and a clean work area.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and wear required PPE.
  • Work independently or as part of a fabrication team.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Tier Qualifications

Welder I

  • Entry-level welding experience or completion of a welding program preferred.
  • Basic understanding of welding equipment and safety practices.
  • Able to perform basic welds with instruction and supervision.
  • Willing to learn company procedures and quality standards.

Welder II

  • Previous welding experience in manufacturing or steel fabrication.
  • Able to read basic drawings and welding symbols.
  • Able to set up equipment and complete common welds with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrates consistent weld quality and productivity.

Welder III

  • Advanced welding experience in heavy steel fabrication or a similar environment.
  • Strong understanding of drawings, welding symbols, and specifications.
  • Able to complete complex welds and troubleshoot welding issues independently.
  • Consistently produces high-quality work and may assist in training less-experienced welders.

Pay is determined based on the candidate’s experience and demonstrated level of expertise.

Requirements:

General Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Welding training, certification, or relevant work experience preferred.
  • Ability to pass a company welding test at the appropriate skill level.
  • Basic knowledge of welding equipment, tools, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to read and follow work instructions.
  • Ability to read basic fabrication drawings and welding symbols, based on position level.
  • Ability to use grinders, torches, measuring tools, and other fabrication equipment.
  • Ability to inspect welds and identify basic quality issues.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Willingness to work overtime or different shifts when required.
  • Ability to follow all company safety rules and wear required PPE.

Experience by Tier

  • Welder I: Entry-level experience or completion of a welding program preferred.
  • Welder II: Approximately 2–4 years of relevant welding experience preferred.
  • Welder III: Approximately 5 or more years of advanced welding experience preferred.

Equivalent combinations of education, training, and hands-on experience may be considered.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to work in confined or elevated areas when required.
  • Ability to use hands and arms to operate welding and fabrication equipment.
  • Ability to maintain focus while performing repetitive or detailed work.
  • Visual ability sufficient to inspect welds, measurements, and finished work.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in a steel fabrication or manufacturing environment.
  • Regular exposure to heat, sparks, fumes, dust, noise, and moving equipment.
  • Required PPE may include a welding hood, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toed boots, and protective clothing.
