TITLE: Rental Sales & Equipment Maintenance

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: Family-owned and operated since 1939, Koopman Lumber & Hardware boasts 13 locations across Massachusetts. These include three full-line stores in Whitinsville, Uxbridge, and North Grafton, offering lumber, hardware, paint, and lawn and garden supplies. Additional locations include a lumber, hardware, paint, and design center in Sharon, a full-service paint store in Milford, and lumber yards with kitchen design centers in Hudson, Andover, Fairhaven, Dennis, Pembroke, and Indian Orchard. We also have distribution centers in Uxbridge and Sutton. Koopman Lumber specializes in building materials and supplies, including lumber, hardware, moldings and millwork, tools, power equipment, windows and doors, engineered lumber, and kitchen products. Our extensive network of outside sales professionals serves most of New England, offering expertise in lumber, millwork, kitchens, and paint.

DESCRIPTION:

Power Shop Associate (Small Engine & Equipment Repair)

Location: Grafton, MA

BASIC FUNCTION

This role is focused exclusively on the Power Shop. As a Power Shop Associate, you’ll support the inspection, maintenance, and repair of power equipment and small-engine tools, ensuring customer and store equipment is safe, reliable, and ready for use. While this position includes some customer interaction, the primary responsibility is hands-on mechanical work in the shop rather than rental counter operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Power Equipment & Small Engine Work
  • Sharpen, repair, and rebuild chainsaw chains, mower blades, blower components, and similar small-engine equipment
  • Perform basic diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on customer-owned and store-owned power equipment
  • Inspect equipment for safety, function, and readiness before return to customers or floor placement
  • Assemble and prep new power equipment for sale or use
  • Order parts and supplies as needed; maintain accurate parts and service inventory

Shop Operations & Safety

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe power shop and work area
  • Follow all safety procedures, manufacturer guidelines, and internal standards
  • Properly document service work and repairs completed
  • Participate in company-sponsored technical training as required
  • Customer Support (Power Shop Focused)
  • Assist customers with basic questions related to equipment use, maintenance, and repairs
  • Provide clear guidance on safe operation and care of power equipment
  • Interact professionally with customers in person and over the phone as it relates to power equipment service

Team Support

  • Support a positive, team-oriented work environment
  • Communicate effectively with store leadership and sales staff regarding equipment status and repairs

REQUIREMENTS

  • Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to perform hands-on repair and maintenance work
  • Experience with small engines, power equipment, or similar mechanical systems preferred
  • Ability to read work orders, follow instructions, and use basic computer systems (e.g., BisTrack, vendor portals)
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
  • Ability to safely lift and move equipment using proper lifting techniques
  • Clear communication skills and a customer-focused mindset
  • Commitment to following company values, safety standards, and operational objectives


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to stand for up to 8 hours
  • Ability to reach overhead, sit, climb, balance, lift, twist, bend, stoop, and squat
  • Regular ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds
  • Manual dexterity required for equipment handling and repairs

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work performed both indoors (temperature-controlled) and outdoors in varying weather
  • Additional duties may be assigned as needed
  • Some requirements may be subject to age restrictions based on Massachusetts Youth Employment Guidelines
