About This Position
Job Summary
KIPP DC Lead Academy’s Culture Interventionist will do “whatever it takes” to make sure that our students are successful in school. The Culture Interventionist will ensure that we follow consistent practices, build a community culture of achievement, and create a sense of belonging for students, staff, and families. They will also support students inside and outside of the classroom in developing skills to restore damaged relationships and will work with teachers (in a limited capacity) to bring this work alive in classroom cultures.

About the Team
Our six elementary schools in Washington, DC, serve grades 1st - 4th. Our teachers, leaders, and student support teams work together to provide instruction that is rigorous, culturally responsive, and grounded in strong relationships with students and families. We believe classrooms should be academically challenging, joyful, and identity-affirming, and we support teachers through coaching, collaborative planning structures, and dedicated development time.
About the Role
As a Culture Interventionist you will:

- Create and follow-in individualized or classroom-based, proactive incentive systems that help students be successful
- Develop strong relationships with all the students in the school; treat students with consistent, high, and fair expectations
- Communicate effectively and frequently with the leadership team, office manager, students, teachers, and families
- Analyze student PBIS and discipline data on a weekly, and monthly basis to identify trends and intervene with specific students
- Follow up with teachers around particular student issues and, with the appropriate Vice Principal, create safety / re-entry plans when necessary; monitor and enforce those plans
- Follow all KIPP DC discipline protocols for both general and special education students; learn about special education discipline procedures and protocols and make sure to follow them
- Perform clerical duties, as required, relating to DeansList, student reports and records, attendance reports, etc.
Location and Type of Work
Fully In-Person (5 days per week onsite)
This is an in-person, school-based instructional role located at a KIPP DC campus in Washington, DC. KIPP DC schools serve students and families in person, and this position requires daily on-site presence to deliver instruction, provide student support, collaborate with teammates, and engage with families.
Culture Interventionist work hours are typically 7:30 am to 5:00 pm two days per week, and 7:30 am to 4:00 pm three days per week, to allow for duties, collaboration, and professional development.
Key Responsibilities
The percentages for each key responsibility are estimates, and other duties may be assigned. Flexibility and responsiveness are encouraged to accommodate organizational needs.
Behavior Support- 40%
- First responder to Deanslist referrals, including:
- Picking up student, debriefing event, taking statements (as needed), and identifying necessary consequences and/or restorative practices
- Reaching out to relevant family members
- Closing the loop with teacher(s) involved
- Closing out all referrals by COB and/or ensure managing person has closed out
- Know and follow individual student plans in all interactions, and ensure others do as well
- Plan for and lead student small groups focused directly on skill development (2-3x a week)
- WAAG (Week at a Glance) for groups available for MHPs and teachers to refer to for implementation in their rooms
- Be a visible, positive presence throughout the school and in classrooms throughout the day
- Meet with MHPs and/or SpEd Instructional Coach (during Grade Level Meeting time) to review BIPs, 504s, and Tier 2/3 plans
- Analyze Deanslist referral data to identify trends for whole school PD and to inform teacher support
- Restock School Store in line with assigned budget and run School Store
- Identify, display/share, and celebrate Llamas of the Week
- Act as an auxiliary member of the Leadership Team, including:
- Supporting schoolwide systems related to arrival, dismissal, attendance, etc.
- Modeling professionalism, positivity, and teamwork in all interactions (with students, other staff, parents, and community members)
- Lead professional development for individuals, small groups, and whole staff
- Designing SWAG for students and staff
- Support whole-school assembly planning with Specials team
- Lead (or manage committees for) large scale events (BTSN, Winter Market, BHM, Book Fair), including:
- Calendaring events during summer PD with Leadership Team
- Planning all logistics
- Partnering with Operations
- Managing budget with Leadership Team
- Debriefing the event with Leadership Team manager
- Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, professional development sessions, and weekly planning/feedback meetings.
- Implement coaching and feedback from school leaders, network content coaches, and lead teachers/grade-level chairs.
- When assigned a Capital Teaching Resident, model effective instruction and gradually release responsibility while providing weekly coaching conversations.
- Perform duties (arrival, lunch, transitions, dismissal) as assigned.
- Complete clerical tasks that support instruction and compliance, including student records, attendance, progress reports, and documentation related to IEP goals or interventions.
- Support school events such as family-teacher conferences, open houses, field trips, and community events.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Commitment to working with students from communities with limited access to high-quality educational opportunities
- At least one year of teaching experience in a PreK3–12th grade school OR an education degree that included student teaching / residency with full-classroom responsibility
- “Teaching experience” here refers to serving as the teacher of record / lead instructor responsible for instruction and progress of an assigned class or section. It does not include paraprofessional work, substitute-only experience, internships without lead teaching responsibility, or daycare-only experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in the relevant content area
- Experience leading whole school PBIS or culture initiatives
- Experience teaching in an urban K–12 public school setting
- Strong communication skills with families and caregivers, including culturally responsive partnership
- Strong collaboration habits with teammates (planning, data analysis, shared ownership for student growth)
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to remain in a classroom environment for extended periods to deliver instruction.
- Must be able to monitor students throughout the school building, including transitions, lunch, and recess.
- Must be able to participate in occasional school events that may occur outside traditional school hours (for example, family conferences, student showcases, or community events).

- KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
- Currently, individuals in this role have up to 15 paid time off days, up to 10 paid sick days, and 12 paid holidays. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.
