Job Summary
The Design Engineer III – Electrical is a senior-level technical role responsible for leading the design, coordination, and delivery of electrical building systems for multi-family new construction projects across California. This position requires advanced electrical design expertise, strong project management capabilities, and a commitment to mentoring junior engineers — while ensuring design quality, code compliance, sustainability, and constructability across all project phases.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
- Lead the full-cycle design of electrical systems — including power distribution, lighting, emergency power, fire alarm, low-voltage, and service/feeder design — for multi-family residential buildings from concept through construction documents.
- Perform and oversee complex engineering calculations including load analysis, short-circuit analysis, arc flash, voltage drop, fault current studies, and lighting calculations.
- Prepare and review detailed engineering drawings, one-line diagrams, panel schedules, riser diagrams, and specifications using Revit MEP and AutoCAD.
- Apply and interpret applicable codes and standards including NEC, California Electrical Code (CEC), NFPA 72, NFPA 101, Title 24 Part 6 (Energy), ADA, and local jurisdictional requirements.
- Evaluate and select electrical equipment — including transformers, switchgear, panelboards, emergency generators, and lighting systems — based on performance, cost, and sustainability criteria.
- Lead Title 24 Part 6, CALGreen, and LEED compliance efforts for electrical systems, including energy modeling coordination and documentation support.
BIM & Digital Delivery
- Own and oversee the electrical Revit MEP model across all project phases, ensuring compliance with project BIM Execution Plans (BEPs) and company BIM standards.
- Lead model coordination and clash detection workflows using Navisworks and BIM 360 / Autodesk Construction Cloud.
- Drive continuous improvement of company BIM standards, Revit families, templates, and digital delivery processes across the electrical discipline.
Project Management
- Serve as the engineering lead on multiple concurrent projects, managing design timelines, deliverables, and coordination with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Review and approve submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings during construction administration to verify compliance with design intent.
- Conduct site visits for field verification, progress reviews, and issue resolution.
- Support the preparation of proposals, fee estimates, and project schedules.
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure all designs meet applicable building codes, energy standards, and company quality guidelines.
- Implement and lead QA/QC review processes for drawings and calculations produced by Design Engineers I and II.
- Stay current on NEC code cycles, Title 24 updates, California utility requirements, and sustainable design best practices.
Team Leadership & Mentorship
- Provide technical guidance, peer review, and mentorship to Design Engineers I and II, supporting their growth toward professional licensure.
- Contribute to training initiatives, knowledge-sharing sessions, and the ongoing development of the electrical engineering team.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with project managers, architects, contractors, and other engineering disciplines to deliver integrated, coordinated designs.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (required).
- 6–10 years of experience in electrical building systems design, with multi-family or mixed-use residential projects strongly preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; candidates with active PE pursuit will also be considered.
Technical Skills
- Expert proficiency in Revit MEP and AutoCAD; strong experience with Navisworks, Bluebeam Revu, and BIM 360 / Autodesk Construction Cloud.
- Deep knowledge of NEC, California Electrical Code, NFPA 72/101, and Title 24 Part 6 energy compliance requirements.
- Experience with electrical calculation and analysis software (e.g., SKM Power Tools, ETAP, AGi32, or equivalent).
