Position Summary
- The Prean/PACU RN is knowledgeable in surgical procedures, medications, anesthesia techniques and ambulatory surgery
- They will answer patient questions, give appropriate pre-operative instructions, and will communicate with team members concerning patient care
- Prean responsibilities include check-in, vital signs, documentation, consents, and assessments
- Transport patients to the operating room, available to help with positioning and prepping patients
- PACU duties include monitoring, documentation, management, discharging, and patient/family education
- Passion for communicating to patients with warmth, ability to explain procedures, medications, and physician instructions
Essential Duties/Functions
- Assess patient conditions and initiate appropriate nursing and/or medical care in accordance with established guidelines
- Perform verbal assessments with patients prior to admission in-person or via telephone, while communicating information to appropriate team members
- Ensures care requirements of patients are accomplished through use of the nursing process including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation
- Performs patient and family teaching/education as established by the department
- Demonstrates flexibility in performance of patient care tasks to achieve timely, responsive, cost effective and high-quality care
- Demonstrates flexibility in performance to achieve the goals
- Communicates effectively, conscientiously, and frequently with all team members to share information and independently solve problems in a positive, results oriented manner
- Provides instructions and emotional support to patient, family, and significant other
- Communicates appropriate information to surgeons and anesthesiologists concerning patient care
- Completes patient charting in an accurate, concise, and timely manner
- Demonstrates an ability to prioritize patient needs
- Demonstrates the ability to respond appropriately in an emergency
- Practices flexibility in scheduling to provide adequate staff coverage in the department
- Performs and documents initial and ongoing assessments on patients
- Verifies patient identity, collects pertinent health and psychosocial data from the chart, checks physician orders, and verifies the history and physical is within the acceptable time frame according to policy before taking patient to the operating room
- Start and remove IVs
- Administration of Prean/PACU oral and IV medications
- Prean measurements for stage 2 liposuction compression garment order
- Reports unusual circumstances concerning the patients condition or the procedure to the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist
- Recognizes and responds appropriately to patient and environmental safety factors
- Monitors patients for safety-related issues
- Provides patients instructions regarding safety
- Notifies the appropriate authority of potential and actual safety hazards and takes immediate, proper intervention to correct
- Understands, applies, supports, and follows departmental policies, procedures, and standards always
- Assists in developing/updating of policies and procedures
- Performs follow-up calls to patients
- Help with center opening/closing duties if required
Education
Current Michigan RN license, BSN preferredMust currently be BLS and ACLS certified or obtain your certifications within 30 days of employment (reimbursement is available)
Experience
- Minimum three (3) years of ambulatory surgery clinical experience as a registered nurse (RN) in Prean/PACU
- Emergency room or ICU experience preferred
Interpersonal Skills and Attributes
- Bilingual English and Spanish is a plus
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding patient health information
- Ability to focus on patient safety, teamwork, patient outcomes, patient experience and quality improvement
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Strong communication skills: written and verbal and interpersonal
- Microsoft Office experience
- Skills and expertise in Prean and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
- Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision required
- Flexible, reliable, patient-oriented, and self-motivated
- Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action when needed
- Professional behavior/appearance required
- Able to apply common sense and understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions
- Ability to work within a team setting in accordance with our overall mission and goal
