Position Summary:
The Bone and Joint Rehabilitation Services (BJRS) Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) is responsible for conducting Occupational Therapy interventions to reduce pain, restore function, promote mobility, and prevent disability following disease, injury, surgery, or loss of a body part. The BJRS COTA works in a collaborative model with the occupational therapist (OT) and/or the OT/Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) to provide high quality healthcare through instruction and motivation, patient education, and progression of patient rehabilitation towards their established short/long term patient centered goals that fall within the scope of COTA practice guidelines. COTA’s are expected to conduct all interventions and communication with compassion, patient centric mindset, knowledge of current/emerging evidence based techniques and technologies, all the while being cognizant of cost effectiveness and ethical / legal guidelines.

Position Requirements:
Formal Education / Training:
1. Graduate of an accredited COTA Program.
2. Current / active license in the state of Tennessee.
3. Prior experience in outpatient occupational therapy.
4. Experience with upper extremity orthosis fabrication is preferred.

Workplace Experience:
1. Patient Care Delivery
2. Demonstrate ability to deliver positive and professional communication and demeanor within the workplace

Equipment and Skills Training:
1. Able to work within the companies EMR system with accuracy and efficiency.
2. Able to work with a standard PC, copier/fax, and language line.
3. Adjust any necessary exercise equipment for patient care activity in a safe manner.
4. Able to provide clear, skilled documentation for accurate, timely and detailed charting and billing processes.
5. Able to work well under pressure and function independently and as part of the Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee (BJIT) team of physicians, physician assistants, medical assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, technicians, athletic trainers and physical / occupational therapists.
6. Able to apply COTA knowledge safely and effectively to all necessary areas of daily patient care.
7. Able to safely apply physical agents required and recommended by POC.

Physical Environment:
1. Out-patient rehabilitation care in multi-disciplinary team rehabilitation setting
2. May be exposed to risk of blood borne pathogens/diseases.

Physical Effort:
1. Able to communicate clearly and efficiently in English, both written and verbally.
2. Prolonged standing, repetitive position changes, walking for length of work shift.
3. Frequently lifts, positions, transfers, and pushes patients.
4. Frequently moves supplies and equipment requiring moderate physical effort (lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 lbs.).
5. Manual dexterity and mobility.
6. Frequent reaching, pushing/pulling, bending, repetitive use of tools (hole punch, scissors, heat guns).
7. Occasionally removes or replaces supplies or equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. from locations at or above shoulder level.
8. Lift and / or carry patients with necessary assistance / assistive devices in case of emergency evacuation.

Key Results:
Implements treatment plans established by supervising Occupational Therapist based on standards of practice using an interdisciplinary approach with patients, families, and staff.
Demonstrates knowledge and ability to apply therapeutic principles and practices consistent with standards established by the American Occupational Therapy Association.
Progresses patients through levels of treatment effectively and safely under supervision and guidance of Occupational Therapist.
Consults with supervising Occupational Therapist and other staff members to coordinate physical therapy with other therapeutic activities.
Provides input to the Occupational Therapist regarding patient’s progress at regular intervals as required / necessary.
Demonstrates the ability to communicate with patients and families in establishing favorable attitudes and motivation toward the rehabilitation process.
Consistently meets established clinic productivity expectations by generating the expected units per visit while maintaining high-quality, patient-centered care and compliance with payer and state regulations.
Performs timely, thorough, and complete documentation of patients’ care.
Maintains work areas and personal appearance in a way that reflects professionalism and demonstrates cleanliness, orderliness, and safety.
Participates in and contributes in areas with the intent of improving department effectiveness, processes, communication, and/or image in the organization. This includes attending 75% of all staff / departmental meetings.
Manages time and caseloads effectively
Demonstrates ability to show functional progression and need for skilled rehab services v. lesser skilled provider.
