$119,912.00 - $152,131.20

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our Presurgical Evaluation team. We welcome and support caregivers to join us in our relentless pursuit of healing.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive preoperative evaluations for patients scheduled for surgical and procedural care at a large academic medical center.
  • Ensure patients are medically optimized for surgery through risk assessment, diagnostic review, and coordination of care with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Perform detailed preoperative history and physical examinations for surgical candidates.
  • Assess medical comorbidities and perioperative risk to determine readiness for anesthesia and surgery.
  • Formulate patient-centered care plans to optimize patients prior to procedures.
  • Order, review, and interpret preoperative diagnostic tests, labs, and imaging as appropriate.
  • Utilize Epic electronic health record for documentation, order entry, and care coordination.
  • Collaborate closely with anesthesiologists to determine perioperative risk and anesthesia considerations.
  • Communicate with surgeons and procedural teams regarding patient readiness and required optimization.
  • Provide medication management and perioperative medication instructions.
  • Identify patients requiring specialty evaluation or further medical optimization prior to surgery.
  • Educate patients and families regarding preparation, medication adjustments, and expectations for the perioperative period.
  • Coordinate with surgeons, proceduralists, ancillary medical staff, and scheduling teams to ensure timely completion of preoperative requirements.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at improving surgical readiness, reducing day-of-surgery delays and cancellations, and enhancing patient experience.
  • Maintain compliance with institutional protocols, clinical guidelines, and regulatory requirements.


Skills and Competencies:
  • Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to evaluate complex medical conditions in the perioperative setting.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in Epic EHR and clinical documentation.
  • Patient-centered approach with strong education and counseling skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple cases efficiently in a high-volume clinical environment.


Work Environment:
  • Fast-paced presurgical evaluation clinic within a large medical center.
  • Regular collaboration with anesthesiology, surgery, nursing, and administrative teams.
  • Focus on patient safety, surgical readiness, and streamlined perioperative care.
  • This is a 30-hour position, 7a-5p Monday-Friday


Position Qualifications:
  • Master or Doctoral degree from NP/PA accredited program; board certification is required
  • Massachusetts State License, State Controlled Substances Registration and Federal DEA Controlled Substance required
  • Acute Care/Critical Care clinical experience a plus, but not required
  • 3-5 years of experience preferred
