Job Description
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the development and design of systems, develop manufacturing files and coordinate with suppliers to carry the designs through the quoting and procurement phase, test, trouble-shoot and suggest improvements for current system designs, and maintain up-to-date technical documentation for these systems. You will also be responsible for developing as-built assembly documentation, manual documentation and specification sheets. The ideal candidate will be a hard-working professional able to undertake a variety of engineering projects from mechanical system theory to design work, with self-motivated drive and ambition in initiating and completing work. Applicant will be timely in all their responsibilities, complete all assignments in accordance with standard operating procedures, and ensure their work is completed with a “quality first” mindset. This position reports to the Engineering Manager.
Spot Zero designs and manufactures advanced reverse osmosis water purification systems for the marine industry. Our systems are engineered for performance, reliability, and ease of use in demanding environments.
Responsibilities:
- Ability to take a concept from initial design through production with minimal supervision and own the overall mechanical design of systems
- Design for manufacturability (DFM) and assembly (DFA) experience
- Collaborate with the engineering team to innovate and refine product designs, ensuring functionality, durability, and manufacturability
- Revision control for all custom-made parts and assemblies
- File management of all CAD data, drawings, and manufacturing files
- Coordinate with suppliers to obtain quotes and lead times for prototype and custom parts
- Coordinate with customers and design team on custom design projects
- Create and maintain mechanical, plumbing, and electrical drawings, product manuals and technical data
- Participate in the review and improvement of existing products, identifying opportunities for enhancement and efficiency gains
- Engage in product troubleshooting and provide technical support
- Develop Standard Operating Procedure guides (SOPs) for active project processes
- R&D of a new assembly procedure or mechanism to improve overall build efficiency
- Hands-on involvement in prototyping, assembly, and testing of systems
- Ability to diagnose mechanical and system-level issues in real hardware
- Experience working with vendors on fabrication, tolerances, and cost optimization
- Understanding of tolerance stack-ups and real-world fit/function
- Applicant must be an expert in the use of SolidWorks. At minimum a Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate (CSWA), Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP) or Certified SolidWorks Expert (CSWE) being preferred
- Proficient in SolidWorks Routing, SolidWorks Sheet Metal, SolidWorks PDM, and SolidWorks Weldments
- Proficient in the construction and maintenance of large complex SolidWorks assemblies
- Proficient with GD&T, along with the creation and maintenance of drawings, using SolidWorks
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or similar field
- Must be familiar with multiple types of manufacturing processes to determine the most appropriate and cost-effective process for manufacturing a given part. Some, but not all, of these processes are CNC sheet metal cutting, sheet metal bending, and CNC machining.
- Must be extremely organized and can work on multiple projects at the same time.
- Understanding of electrical theory with practical experience and/or formal electrical training being preferred
- Effectively self-prioritize and work independently with limited supervision
- Can work, communicate, and solve challenges in an environment with ever changing, and sometimes ambiguous, requirements
- Ability to create processes and procedures to improve workflow for both administrative and process-based tasks
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Adobe Acrobat DC.
- Familiar with creating technical documentation, such as service manuals and standard operating procedures
- Comfortable performing fluid calculations to determine optimal system performance and design
- Attend regularly scheduled product training and have the necessary initiative to complete self-directed professional development
Preferred Experience
- Fluid systems (pumps, filtration, plumbing, pressure systems)
- Marine or harsh-environment product design
- Sheet metal enclosure design for electromechanical systems
- Noise, vibration, and thermal considerations in compact systems
