Clinical Support Specialist – Job Description
8 hour shifts 6:30am -3pm and 3pm-11:30pm
Every other weekend
Fair share of holidays on a rotating basis
The Clinical Support Specialist provides both direct and indirect patient care across multiple hospital departments. This role supports nursing staff, enhances clinical operations, and ensures the delivery of safe, efficient, and compassionate patient care. The position is designed as a flexible, cross-functional support role that includes patient care, clerical responsibilities, patient safety, de-escalation, comfort, throughput, community outreach, regulatory compliance, and unit-based tasks assigned by nursing leadership.
Key Responsibilities
· Delivers patient care under the direction of a licensed nurse in accordance with established care plans and individual patient care needs
· Provide continuous patient observation/ patient sitter or 1:1 duty
· Support patients requiring restraint/seclusion care
· Support discharge planning activities, including coordination and patient readiness
· Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges across hospital unit.
· Assist with and participate in patient and staff educational programs
· Participate in community outreach initiatives as assigned
· Conduct environmental rounding and assist with regulatory compliance activities
· Assist patients with ambulation, repositioning, and fall-prevention measures.
· Collect specimens to include blood and assist with basic diagnostic procedures such as EKG as directed
· Accurately document patient care activities in the medical record per facility protocols.
· Communicate patient observations or concerns to the nursing or appropriate clinical staff promptly
· Adhere to infection control, safety, and confidentiality standards in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
· Float between multiple hospital departments or units to provide support based on staffing needs, including coverage for staff breaks or meals.
· Perform clerical duties such as data entry or clerical tasks
· Perform additional duties assigned by nursing administration or supervising clinical staff
· Supports care coordination and throughput
· Provides interdisciplinary collaboration by communicating effectively with nurses, providers, counselors, case management and ancillary staff to support patient-centered care and patient experience efforts.
Education:
· Associate’s degree in a Healthcare Related Field required
· Bachelor’s degree in a Healthcare Related Field prefer
Experience:
· Minimum 1- year experience in a healthcare or related setting required
· EMT or similar clinical experience preferred
· Phlebotomy or specimen collection experience preferred
Certifications:
· BLS certification per hospital requirements
· De-escalation training as provided by facility upon hire and updated per hospital requirements
· Phlebotomy certification preferred
Required Skills and Competencies
· Strong patient care and interpersonal skills
· Ability to work effectively in multiple clinical environments
· Basic knowledge of patient safety and infection control practices
· Strong communication and teamwork skills
· Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt quickly
· Ability to float in multiple units throughout an assigned shift as the needs of the hospital change
· Basic knowledge of medical terminology, medical supplies and medical equipment
· Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
· Maintain current BLS and de-escalation training
· Maintain sitter, restraint and seclusion training
· Ability to operate standard office equipment such as copiers, faxes, printers
Physical Demands
· Ability to bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, sit, squat
· Ability to lift push, or pull up to 50 pounds
