About This Position

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Schedules, ensures time card accuracy and clinically supervises Nuclear Medicine staff. Evaluates exams protocols and equipment. Provides technologists with instructions for exams/procedures/therapies. Performs all types of Nuclear Medicine procedures under the supervision of a qualified physician. Utilizes radiopharmaceuticals and imaging procedures to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patient medical problems for patients throughout the age continuum.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Coordinates and designs staff work schedules to ensure appropriate coverage and quality patient care.

3. *Reviews and makes additions/corrections to time cards.

4. *Provides input into staff job performance evaluations; monitors clinical performance, provides guidance and correction as needed; reports deficiencies to manager.

5. *Performs radionuclide procedures under the authorization of an appropriately licensed physician; prepares radiopharmaceuticals for administration by injection, ingestion, and inhalation; observes all regulations for control of radiation and practices radiation safety procedures; performs venapuncture.

6. *Assists radiologists in the therapeutic use of radioisotopes under prescribed safety conditions; applies EKG patches and cables; implements imaging procedures for patients of all ages; maintains patient confidentiality.

7. *Competently operates all Nuclear Medicine equipment and support systems to include HIS, RIS, scheduling system and PACS; provides training and support to staff for equipment and computer systems.

8. *Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents patient care and procedures in accordance with established nuclear medicine standards and guidelines.

9. *Maintains accurate records of isotopes used.

10. *Completes quality control on scanning equipment; cleans, disinfects and maintains equipment as necessary; notifies manager of equipment problems and calls appropriate service vendors as needed.

11. *Coordinates exams within the department and with other departments to provide expedient and complete care; communicates with medical staff, coworkers, patients, families and other hospital staff to assure quality patient care.

12. Handles telephone calls for scheduling, coordination, and questions with courtesy and accuracy.

13. *Coordinates the department’s quality improvement plan as required; coordinates and maintains nuclear medicine quality assurance, compliance records and daily work activities; assists in the future planning of the nuclear medicine department.

14. Keeps area properly supplied.

15. Advances work knowledge by participating in continuing education inservices, reading periodicals/literature and seeking ongoing development opportunities; attends departmental, educational and hospital committee meetings as required.

16. *Coordinates departmental orientation and student clinical education in nuclear medicine.

17. *Coordinates annual competencies for staff including documentation of completion; maintains attendance records for staff.

18. *Accesses and administers drugs and biologicals that are pertinent to essential job functions in accordance with Medical Center procedures.

19. Utilizes AIDET communication and provides patient education to inform patient about procedure to minimize patient anxiety.

20. Transports patient and /or equipment alone or with assistance in bed, wheeled cart, or shellchair to designated area.

21. Complies with DOT regulations - BHI mobile personnel only.

22. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

2. Knowledge of the principles of nuclear medicine including radiation safety procedures.

3. Knowledge of the clinical applications of nuclear medicine.

4. Skill in operating nuclear medicine equipment, cameras, PACS, and other related computer systems.

5. Ability to react and effectively perform work under stressful and emergent situations.

6. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

7. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

8. Ability to interact effectively with patients, family, staff, and physicians.

9. Ability to care for diverse patients throughout the age continuum.

10. Ability to exercise courtesy and professionalism in the work environment.

11. Ability to practice proper body mechanics to ensure personal and patient safety.

12. Ability to clinically supervise and evaluate employee work performance.

13. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of patients and families in accordance with HIPPA regulations and hospital procedures.

14. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduate of a nuclear medicine program or equivalent with certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Nuclear Medicine required. Minimum of one (1) year experience as a nuclear medicine technologist required

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare

professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network.

BHI Mobile Personnel only: Valid State of Nebraska class B driver’s license required. Verification and maintenance of

responsible driving record per facility standards required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)

(DOT) – Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
