About This Position

ArloAt Arlo, we're transforming health insurance for small and medium-sized businesses across the U.S. Our mission is to make healthcare more affordable and long-term-oriented by driving innovation at every level of health plan design.
2024 marked our breakthrough year: we hit profitability, found strong market fit, and brought affordable healthcare to more than 200 businesses and their employees.
We’re a small but mighty team bringing wide-ranging expertise:
  • Developing mission-critical software at Palantir
  • Scaling a Y Combinator startup from the very first hire to Series A (50+ employees)
  • Creating actuarial models used by major health insurers
  • Leading patient operations teams at a high-growth health plan startup

RoleAt Arlo, we’re rebuilding health insurance for people who are fed up with the status quo. As our Founding Platform Engineer, you’ll architect the systems that power everything from real-time health insurance quotes to patient-facing tools that make care more transparent, affordable, and human.
You’ll work across infrastructure, data, and ML interfaces — giving patients upfront pricing before doctor visits, brokers smart quoting tools, and our team modern internal systems powered by LLMs.
Some things you might build:
  • Quoting Infrastructure – High-performance APIs that crunch millions of data points to generate accurate, real-time insurance quotes.
  • Financial Intelligence Engine – Systems that trace the source of premium payments across ACH rails and auto-engage late payers with smart nudges.
  • Patient-Facing Cost Transparency Tools – Infrastructure behind our patient apps that show members exactly what they’ll owe before every visit.
  • LLM-Powered Ops + Outreach – Internal platforms and workflows that use LLMs to reduce manual work and communicate with brokers and patients in smarter, more personalized ways.

You’ll have high ownership, operate in a fast-moving environment, and be core to how we make healthcare radically simpler and more patient-first.
Qualifications
  • Experience building products: You have at least 2+ years of experience working as a full-stack or backend engineer, and you have experience in building software from the ground up (i.e., actively involved in making architectural decisions, planning, scoping, etc.)
  • Modeling operational workflows: You have previously modeled operational workflows and translated them into software.
  • Be efficient: You show an interest in using the best tool for the job. Our current favorites are Python, Postgres, Typescript, React, and other AWS services for our infrastructure.
  • Ownership & Prioritization: You don't just want to knock out tasks but want to shape our holistic product strategy by making sound feature decisions and prioritizations. You're thinking beyond the immediate engineering challenges in how your work links with Arlo's mission.
  • Autonomy: You like to work with a high degree of autonomy. You know how to break a complex problem down into tasks and how to prioritize what needs to be done first.
  • Passion: You enjoy working on challenging problems and go above and beyond (we work hard). You care about your work and enjoy being intellectually challenged. You want to solve problems in health care and insurance.
  • The Extra: We love people who have worked at a startup / previously ran a startup, or want to found one in the future!

  • What we offer
  • A fast-paced environment with steep learning opportunity
  • A collaborative team that's greatly motivated by our mission and the problems we work on
  • The direct impact of your work on Arlo's business - our broker facing software is key to our success, and we win or lose with the quality of our product
  • Ownership in the form of equity and employee revenue share
  • ... and the usual tech startup benefits - 100%-paid health insurance benefits, free lunches in the office, fun company retreats, commuter benefits, etc.

  • ProcessThis is what you can expect when we like your application:
  • 30-minute introductory call with Karthik (CTO/COO & Co-Founder)
  • Take-home coding challenge
  • 60-minute review of your coding challenge with Karthik (virtual)
  • Onsite interview at our NYC office (or virtual for remote), including technical and behavioral/cultural components
