About This Position

Reports To: Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds

Department: Maintenance

Salary: $16.00

Job Status: Full Time & Part Time, Non-Exempt

Union Status: Union

Position Scope: Under the direction of the Superintendent of Buildings, Grounds and Project Management, this position provides daily upkeep of zoo grounds, walks, public areas, parking lot, and other areas. It is critical for this position to create a positive first impression and overall welcoming experience for visitors at the Utica Zoo.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform general custodial and environmental cleaning duties as directed by supervisor including sweeping, scrubbing, dusting, waste collection, window cleaning, etc.
  • Daily cleanup of zoo including restrooms, walkways, playground/bounce pillow, guest and staff areas, and trash/recycling bins
  • Provide environmental and janitorial support for special events and rentals and scheduled or requested
  • Ensure familiarity with task checklists: Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and Annual.
  • Aid in maintaining storage areas, workspaces, and shop in neat and orderly fashion.
  • Learn correct use and maintenance of radio equipment.
  • Participate in all department activities, including meetings.
  • Aid in monitoring the well-being of the animals throughout the day; report any concerns to supervisor and animal care staff.
  • Maintain proper reporting and records when required, in line with zoo protocols.
  • Assure work, equipment, works areas, and self, represent the Zoo in a safe, clean, professional, and orderly manner always.
  • Assist in working evenings, weekends and special events as scheduled or requested.
  • Adhere to Zoo, OSHA and other regulatory safety standards, procedures and safety protocols.
  • Demonstrate a task oriented, problem-solving attitude, willing to lead by example, act as a role model.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Education / Experience:

  • High school or GED diploma, or equivalent combination of training and/or experience required
  • Must successfully pass a background check and must have a valid, current driver’s license.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to regularly engage in all physical requirements and be able to life/carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Able to actively work in inclement weather conditions year-round.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, kneel, reach above head, pull, climb stairs and ladders.
