About This Position
The City of Louisville is seeking fun and nurturing individuals to be a Child Watch Attendant at our Recreation Center! This position is responsible for the safety and supervision of children while their parents/ caregivers are participating in on-site recreation activities or classes at the Louisville Recreation & Senior Center. This role promotes a positive play atmosphere for children ages six (6) months through twelve (12) years old both indoors and outdoors. The majority of child participants are toddlers and preschool-aged.
Child Watch employees receive a free Recreation & Senior Center pass with member rates!
We have daytime and evening weekday shifts available and also weekend shifts to cover for 5-15 hours per week.
Child Watch employees are eligible to bring up to two (2) children to the program while they are on shift. These children must be the children of or under legal guardianship of the employee and must meet the age requirements of the program for program participation eligibility. Employees who take advantage of this perk are expected to be mindful of providing a positive and safe environment for all participants under their care. Children of or under legal guardianship of City employees who participate in the Child Watch program are expected to meet behavioral standards that apply to all participants or risk losing program participation eligibility.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:
The incumbent must have sufficient strength, agility, stamina, and flexibility to move, lift, or carry up to 20 lbs frequently and occasionally up to 35 lbs. Regular use of hands and arms for reaching, grasping, and picking up objects. Repeating motions may involve the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and sit on the floor without assistance to engage and play with children for extended periods of time. Able to evacuate facility with a group of children which requires lifting toddlers into an evacuation crib and pushing to designated evacuation area during emergencies and drills. Communication abilities include the ability to deliver, receive, and understand verbal and written correspondence with youth and adults. Specific vision ability includes clarity of vision at twenty (20) feet with or without corrective lenses. Job requires perception of speech or the nature of sounds in the environment with or without hearing aids and requires uninterrupted hearing ability to effectively communicate with guests, staff, and to be aware of any possible safety concerns in the Child Watch area.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Noise levels range from moderate to loud. Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment.

- Supervise, provide care, and actively interact and play with children. Common activities include reading, drawing, coloring, puzzling, organizing games, and playing with a variety of fun toys
- Ensure the environment is safe and welcoming
- Establish effective interpersonal relationships through honest, open communication with co-workers, children, and parents
- Lead and instruct children in games and other activities
- Provide comfort to upset children
- Provide feedback to parents
- Take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and take action to prevent accidents
- Act in a professional manner at all times while providing outstanding customer service
- Routine cleaning
- Be responsible for the safety of self, participants, room, equipment, materials, and other areas of the Recreation & Senior Center, inside and out
- Serve as a positive role model with an emphasis on developing and maintaining effective communication with participants, parents, other staff, and supervisors
- Perform CPR and First Aid as needed
- Regular and predictable attendance required
- Other duties as required
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Prior experience working with children required
- Customer service experience preferred
- A high desire to work with children in a child care setting
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with participants, families, and co-workers
- Ability to reason, problem solve, and resolve conflicts effectively
- Must have a good work ethic; be reliable and on time
- American Red Cross Standard First Aid certification and CPR Certification or ability to obtain within ninety (90) days of hire (City provides training) and maintain current certifications through employment.
- Minimum age sixteen (16) years old required
