The Principal Propulsion Engineer will lead the design, development, analysis, and validation of advanced propulsion hardware and systems. This role requires close collaboration across engineering disciplines, suppliers, and test teams to deliver reliable propulsion solutions from concept through operational readiness.
- Support the design, analysis, manufacturing, and testing of propulsion components, assemblies, and propellant management systems.
- Create detailed CAD models of propulsion components, engine systems, and complex assemblies while applying design-for-manufacturing principles.
- Design and analyze engine fluid systems, including fluid networks, pressure management systems, and component selection.
- Develop piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and translate system requirements into detailed engineering designs.
- Create and execute test plans, analyze test data, and use findings to improve propulsion system performance.
- Apply systems engineering principles to engine sizing, performance analysis, requirements definition, and cycle optimization.
- Design and analyze tanks, supporting structures, and propellant and pressure management systems.
- Collaborate with vehicle engineering and test teams to ensure propulsion systems meet performance and integration requirements.
- Partner with suppliers and procurement teams to source propulsion components and manage external engineering relationships.
- Apply agile methodologies to break down complex engineering programs into actionable tasks and deliverables.
The ideal candidate is an experienced aerospace engineer with a strong background in propulsion systems, mechanical design, and multidisciplinary engineering. They should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, managing complex technical challenges, and communicating effectively across engineering teams.
- 10+ years of experience in aerospace vehicle and engine systems engineering or design.
- Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field.
- Strong experience with propulsion systems, engine development, and operational engineering environments.
- Proven ability to contribute to multidisciplinary engineering projects and collaborate across technical teams.
- Knowledge of aerospace materials and design considerations for high mechanical and thermal load applications.
- Understanding of aerospace fluid systems, components, and connection specifications.
- Experience designing propulsion systems, analyzing structures and thermal performance, and supporting engine testing activities.
- Hands-on experience assembling and testing propulsion systems is highly valued.
- 5+ years of CAD experience, including work with complex assemblies and large-scale designs.
- Experience with engineering tools such as NX, SolidWorks, ANSYS Mechanical, CFX, StarCCM+, MATLAB, Python, GFSSP, or Microsoft Visio.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in hybrid remote and in-person environments.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Master’s degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience with rotating detonation rocket engines (RDREs/RDEs) or similar advanced propulsion technologies.
- Background in project management, engineering leadership, or technical program ownership.
- Familiarity with agile development methodologies.
- Strong systems engineering experience for propulsion engines or propellant management systems.
- Experience developing engineering processes, standards, and testing methodologies.
- Familiarity with aerospace standards such as SMC-S-016, NASA STD-5012, or AIAA S-080A-2018.
