Job Summary:
The MA position provides direct support to the physician and assists with all aspects of the physician’s practice. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: clinical scheduling, clinical patient flow, surgical and test authorization, scheduling and follow up, patient contact, and liaison with outside agencies.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Booking provider requests for tests and surgeries for patients and obtaining authorizations, recording information in proper location
- Contacting outside facilities and processing related paperwork such as other physician offices, hospitals, and surgical centers and providing them with the necessary information to schedule tests and surgeries
- Following up on surgical patients to ensure necessary pre-op and testing appointments have been completed
- Contacting patients with pertinent information regarding their scheduled test or surgery and scheduling necessary follow up visits
- Ensuring tests results are received before surgery; are reviewed and distributed appropriately (i.e. provider, facility, etc.)
- Accurately documenting necessary information in the computer system, such as pre-certification numbers, and chart for patients having tests and procedures
- Preparing paperwork, x-rays, and other documents as needed for the physician to be available for him or her to take to surgery
- Addressing patient concerns and questions as needed
- Directing requests for worker compensation approval of tests and surgeries and other related information to the case manager
- Pre-authorizing and calling in prescriptions and/or injectables for the physician
- Scheduling post-op and first physical therapy appointment and informing patient
- Applying casts, removing wound dressings, sutures, and casts
- Fitting patients with durable medical equipment and braces appropriately and completing billing paperwork accuratel
- Surgical Scheduling, including coordination with patient Insurance Authorizations
- Managing the physician’s heavy call volume, largely patients requiring appointments, prescription renewal, worker’s compensation notes, FMLA paperwork, etc.
- Coordination with physician and clinical MA
- Performs other duties as assigned by their supervisor
Skills and Abilities:
- Certification from an Accredited Medical Assistant program or prior training, education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired leading to a Medical Assistant title
- High school Diploma or equivalent (GED) required
- Experience as Medical Assistant or Medical Secretary preferred
- Experience working in an orthopaedic practice preferred
- Demonstrate knowledge and compliance of all HIPAA regulations
- Proficient computer skills, especially in EMR systems
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills and outstanding phone etiquette
- Ability to problem solve and work as a member of a team
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Ability to adapt to changing situations
Experience/Educational requirements:
- Experience in a Medical Administrative role - 2+ years, Orthopedic experience is a plus
- Experience working in an EMR (electronic medical record)
- Ability to work well on a team, take direction from multiple people, adapt to changing priorities quickly without issue
- HS Diploma required
- Working knowledge with Microsoft suite of products (Word, Excel, etc.)
Location & Schedule
- Monday- Friday vary 8:00am-5:00pm
- Essex, Madison, and Branford
Salary:
- Starting hourly rate rage: $23-$30, based on experience

Connecticut Orthopaedics (CO) has been serving patients in the greater New Haven area for over 60 years. Our practice has merged with several surrounding orthopaedic groups over the past several years and has become the largest privately-owned orthopaedic practice in New England. Due to our quality of care and attentiveness to our patients, we are proudly the team of orthopaedic physicians for multiple colleges and high schools as well as have our own physical therapy centers. In addition to our orthopaedic service line, we have three MRI suites, (5) acute care orthopaedic walk-in centers and a surgery center in Branford.
The posted pay range and actual compensation offered are based on a variety of factors, including experience, education, certifications, skills, geographic location, market data, internal equity, and organizational needs. The posted range does not reflect the full value of CT Orthopaedics total rewards package, which may include Health & Wellness benefits, 401k contribution including profit-sharing regardless of employee’s contribution, and other available compensation for eligible employees.
